Title: sprouting potatoes?
Post by: Annadl on September 29, 2005, 08:49:11
I have a dozen potatoes chitting in an egg carton in the laundry cupboard doing OK .  The rest I left in the plastic bag in the pantry and have sprouted a lot more!!

Why does one recommend chitting when they sprout quite easily in the cupboard?

Thanks Anna from Downunder

oh, careful with the plastic - they might get mouldy? hence the egg carton/paper bag to do it in.

chitting is sprouting, as far as i undestand it - in a light place is better than in the dark as the sprouts are shorter and sturdier - less likely to get damaged when planting.

i planted my potatoes at the end of march (early varieties) - end of september or beg. of october for you? the sprouts on them were about 1 inch or a little more - and they were all doing great! :)

Yikes!!

I took the potatoes out of the pantry as fast as I could.

In an eggcarton in the garage now ;D

Hope they'll still be OK.
