Title: What to plant now?- newbie
Post by: Hazelb on September 29, 2005, 08:18:11
After a few years of struggling against mares tails I have now got some of my allottment fairly weed free.

Is there anything I can plant now?

I might try a late sowing of carrots and some winter lettuce,  but what sort of things can I try to grow over the colder months?

spinach, lambs letuce as salad crops, broad beans can go in soon. garlic and onions too
do you have a good allotment/gardening book? most books suggest crops for winter growing. or else, sow some green manures if the soil could benefit from that.

I've planted some carrots, had to read all the packets in the garden centre, but eventually found the autumn sowing ones. Also got onion sets and garlic in. Was going to sow salad leaves but my back went! Hope to get back there soon and get them in. BTW I've only had mine for a few weeks.

Hi Crash  :)Get some mixed oriental leaves.  Sow a small amount and then another small amount two weeks later.  Gorgeous raw or stir fried.  I thought they would go soft but not a bit they are really crunchy  :)  I can't stop grazing on them when I'm at the lotty  :)

Very usefull suggestions!: have got over wintering onions in but I was wondering if anyone could recommend specific varieties of Veg salads to try with a view to making use of the plot over the winter/early spring months???

As well as some of the above, I sowed a row of rocket this week.

Also get ready to sow your Broad Beans in November.

There's a cabbage you can sow in October called Advantage
a cauli                                    "                 All Year Round
spinach                               "                 might need a cloche
                lettuce                                 "                 Counter

I've sown a winter lettuce but it says it might need covering up
I just sowed carrot (Autumn King) and Turnip (but it might be a tad late but anyway its germinated well)

Kale can be sown in September

I've looked in the catalogue and there are severa lettuce varieties for sowing up to October

Weedbusta,

If your plot has a snail/slug problem I would advise you to grow your strawbs in hanging

baskets.  I shall do so this year, as the slimey little blighters had a feast on my beautiful

strawbs.
