i've got 'white queen' in a pot on my patio and it's still going strong - got it from a chap in a nearby village who puts all of his leftover plants on an honesty stall - in his end of season sale i got brug for 50p! it's been so beautiful i would have paid much more for it!

talking of intoxicating scent - they're hallucinogenic aren't they? i once knew a delivery driver who spent all afternoon with a large brug specimen in his van - was feeling mighty peculiar by the time he got back :P ??? :o

I have grown some lovely Daturas this year (courtesy of Eileen :)) but alas no flowers yet. Are yours flowers from this year's sowing Di or have you over wintered them from last year. I am sooo envious - lovely photo :)
Hey!!!!! How come I give seeds away and they grow and flower beautifully and mine have done nowt?!!!! Maybe it's our Scottish weather to blame? Or maybe the fact I didn't sow them until a couple of months after you. :-[

Hi Pat  ;D Yep, they are from seed sown this March ! Very fast growing if you feed them lots. I do try to overwinter them, sometimes lucky, sometimes not. They definitely sulk if there's a cold windy spell mid-summer. Which colours are you growing Pat? Could send you some seeds of the white upright one ( first pic ) if you like? Hope you see some flowers soon, they are well worth waiting for! :)
Thanks for the info Di. I don't know what colours they will be. If they come true I think Eileen said they were white, but one of them has a much darker leaf than the other two so I am wondering if it might be a different colour. I think where I probably went wrong is that I did not feed them regularly. My greenhouse is heated in the winter so hopefully they will survive, I do hope so, otherwise I will be going 'cap in hand' for some more, so may take you up on your offer :)
Hey, guess what - I spoke too soon, I went to put my three AT's in the greenhouse as the nights are getting really cold now. I have lovely buds on two of them, so I must have been doing something right after all :D The only thing is that the leaves are a bit lacey, some little critters have been having a good old munch >:(
One bit of advice needed Eileen or Di. Do you cut them back in the winter or leave it till next spring.

Sorry for the delay, but found a few tips for you. I've found autumn pruned ones sometimes die off overwinter, so try to accommodate them fully grown in the conservatory. However, last winter I gave my massive banana tree priority, and put most of the Brugs and Daturas in greenhouse without heat and lost the lot!! :(Â

During the summer they need plenty of water but when the weather gets colder they prefer to be fairly dry. They do better in John Innes No3 compost rather than a multipurpose one and need a layer of gravel at the bottom of the container as well as a handful or so of crocks. Feed regularly from about April with a liquid tomato fertiliser and you should be rewarded with lots of flowers.
At the end of the summer if your plant is too large to fit comfortably into your greenhouse or conservatory you can do a bit of gentle pruning, but this should be very sparing as the cut surfaces will weep during the winter months.
Heavy pruning should always be left until spring time. Both brugmansias and daturas will produce leaves from the old wood so it doesn't matter too much if you get over enthusiastic with your secateurs. As a bonus they root well from cuttings so pot up any prunings.
The best time for repotting is early spring before they are put outside for the season. Brugmansias make lots of roots and do better when repotted every year. If you don't want to move up to a larger pot this isn't a problem just cut back the rootstock with a sharp knife.

The reason why they are called that is if you happen to fall asleep under one you have a good chance of not wakeing up again as they are highly poisones.
I think they are a member of the potatoe family.
FINALLY :D :D Here is a photo of my Datura (AT) courtesy of Eileen. A shame it had to wait until half the leaves had dropped and it was put in the greenhouse to overwinter - but 'as they say' better late than never. I am really pleased with it.
