I have just heard that my 93+year old mentor has died.
He was the most knowledgable person on veg and nature that I have ever known.
An award winning hedgelayer, cider maker, oh and every fruit under the sun liquer maker, which he used to ply me with on each visit, despite me saying iI had to drive!
He started on farms as a young lad, helping his father scythe acres of fields, (no combine 'arvesters back then young un!) and did his time in the hop fields and could thatch a roof too, he was also partilial to singing old Sussex songs at the top of his voice!
He always wanted to keel over in his veg patch but unfortunately broke a hip and ended up in hospital.
I have some wonderful memories of him, and my bean supports were built by him and to his precise specifications, it was the first thing to go on my plot, and the whole of my patch is built around it!
See gardeners carry on, I have his passed on knowledge, a fork, the handle which he repaired for me, seeds from his yellow tomatoes, recipes for his alcoholic beverages, and lots of happy memories of Nelson. :)
Old Gardeners never die, they just push up the daisy's.........he'd have liked that one.
A sad DP aka Blue Murder ;D
Sorry to hear your sad news DP, big hug from me.
Aw Doris, sorry you have lost a good mate and mentor in your friend. Â Old Gardeners never die tho they just keep on digging! and you have all them memories of what he meant to you, all those stories he told you. Â You wont forget him and that is a good legacy.
:( :( :( :( :( :(
DP he will be so glad he handed all that knowledge on to you wherever he is now, he didn't take it all with him. You were lucky to have met him and had so much help from him.
What a lovely tribute to him DP.
He sounds like a wonderful man. He'll live on through the knowledge and friendship he has given you and others. ((((DP))))
It is sad, DorisP to have lost such a lovely friend but what a wonderful rich life he seems to have had and how fitting that he has passed all his garden knowledge on for others to enjoy. He will still live on through your garden and plot and with each season he will be remembered. It is what every gardener would wish for. :( busy_lizzie

Doris that's so sad. But also beautiful. He will live on through you and all the others he inspired. And it sounds like he had a wonderful, full life. big hugs.
It is at times like this that hugs are important. You have a big one from me.

I think he would like that. I am dreading the time that Charlie goes. He is 96 and each year gets a little slower. Everyone on the entire site knows him and he is as much of a fixture as the trading hut. His plot looks better than ours even though he has real sight problems and walks with a stick and uses a long handled trowel for digging. He is lovely and has more knowledge than the rest of us put together. Long may he go on ...... and on ........and on ..........................
