Title: Hops
Post by: Sketty on September 18, 2005, 12:56:08
I've found hops growing in a tangle of brambles, and would like to transplant some to my garden (I can't get at the roots). How and when should I do it? :-\

Hello
I suppose that it depends on where you live, but here on the south coast, hops grow really well.  I have dug mine up and replanted both spring and autumn, just remember if you are doing them now, cut them to ground level, once you have dug them up they can be split and replanted. (Whenever I split plants I pop one in a pot and put it in the nursery ~ greenhouse ~ just in case!.  Look for lovely vibrant growth in the spring, but remember they have those coarse hairy bits on the stem that can cut fragile places, like faces!  Good Luck!

In that case, I would try taking loads of cuttings, trim under leaf nods, bit of hormone powder if you use it and into the nursery.  Remember that now is the time of the year they will be starting their rest, so don't expect too much too soon, watch them until the spring springs & you'll be amazed how they grow.
