I don't think it affects the leeks unduly, it depends how bad it is.  Went to our local leek show a few weeks ago, (one of the men from our site took first prize again), and even some of  the prize  leeks had rust on them.  Our prize winner Brian said that it has been a bad year for leeks and his weren't half as good as last years - weather conditions perhaps.  There a various things you can do,  I believe, which I am sure someone with more expertise that me will tell you.  :) busy_lizzie

My leeks suffer, and it seems to be purely cosmetic.  Only a problem on the tops of the leaves, and when you remove the first layer, you are rewarded with lovely clean leeks.  I think good hygene and rotation help, but wherever my leeks grow, they get rusty!

When I see rust on a leek in the bed, I pick it and eat it :P. This seems to keep the problem under control. I am averaging two leeks a week at the moment ;D

Some of our gardeners reckon Dithane clears it, although I'm not sure it's necessary. I read an expert suggest that using tap water makes rust more likely. No idea why.
