My green tomato chutney. Not a good photo, sorry! Must take a course on digital camera use. :) busy_lizzie
my mouth is watering ~wish we could have a tasting ;D
I know this is an 'old thread' which I've resurrected but still 'practising' with posting photos and the only other photo I've got is one of some rhubarb chutney I made a month ago from the lovely recipe Emma Jane told us about - the rhubarb came from my youngest son's garden (they rarely use it for anything - such a waste >:() but they're thoroughly enjoying the 'end product' now (altho it should 'mature' a bit really) and have asked for more :)
Will be a bit of a wait now tho as the rhubarb is no longer usable :(

Curried Plum Chutters
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a364/Mrsava/curried_plum_chutters.jpg)
Boy those all look yummy. Any chance of getting the recipe for the River Cottage Chutney (or would that be copyright breaking)?? I do not have many chutney recipes so need all the help I can get. :-[ as I have someone with a plum and bramble apple tree that have given me carte blanche to pick as much as I want. ;D
I do however have a good recipe for beetroot (with spiced vinegar) and pickled onions and sweet and sour cucumbers. Will have to take a picture of that to show you all. If anyone want a copy let me know and I will post it but I don't want to teach my granny to suck eggs!! ;D ;D
Doris Pinks : Is there any chance you could send me the recipe for the apple and rhubarb chutney. I tried sending you a message but your box is full.
Thanks

More pickles and chutneys, this time we have pickled red cabbage and spicy curried fruit chutney! ;D

Hello Prink
I have downloaded that avery programme but when I try and install it on my machine I keep getting Error 1303? Any ideas on what the problem is?
Thanks
Jitterbug
Sorry Jb, no idea, I'm not very good on PCs when something goes wrong!
Kathi

'Black Mango' chutney (in the bottle) made with green tomatoes not mangoes 8)
WOW Supersprout that is impressive!!
I managed to get four bottles of curried apple and plum chutney out on Saturday and it turned out wonderful with help from a newly purchased ringing timer ::) ;D
I have now ordered TONS of bottles which were delivered today and DH paled when they turned up on the doorstep. I have taken a dox 1lb bottles out and 6 180 ml jars out for the single people on my christmas list and I feel an itching to go an pull the last of the beetroot out the garden and go and purloin some more bramble apples....
Jitterbug
PS : The pot cleaned up well after a real good scrubbing and soaking.

Who ate all the figs? ;D ;D
Me, and meeeeeeeeee ;D (kept me going).
Got loads of fabric lurking in attic as sewing and crafts are my passion too.

ah yes, Green Tomato... I can never get over how the sharp vinegar mellows after a month or two in storage. I have the last pot of last year's, and compared it with the freshly-made stuff as of 2 days ago - what a difference!
I'll have another batch tonight, if I can persuade Sir to give up some of his chillies... and the blight hasn't rotted all of the bagful.

Here is mine!
Got fed up with messing around with labels so do mine like this now!(http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m317/mrsnesbitt_2006/House/IMG_3638.jpg)

They all look very,very tasty........Labels too.Brilliant . ;D
I don't do complicated labels - I use the write-on sellotape on the lids, so I can peel it off easily if I ever need to!
Here's my grand total:

13 are green tomato (rescued as blight struck), 3 runner bean (Delia) 1 cucumber relish (the only whole one left!), 1 aubergine and garlic and 2 beetroot.
There may be more beetroot ahead. If I can get my hands on more jars!

I want a recipe for a really good red tomato chutney, that stays red and chunky! I made spicy tomato and onion yesterday, and it went orangey brown. I suppose I am after more of a relish than a chutney. I shall keep trying!
Love array there MB. What is the runner bean chuts like? It is something I have never tried. I don't like picillillillliiiii for example - is it similar?
EJ - dunno yet - it's still in keeping phase. I suspect it might be piccalilli-flavoured in which case I donate it to willing volunteers and consider playing about with recipes (Cos I don't like piccalilli either!).
I've got a red tomato one in the AFRC Home preserving... book, which I'll look up. Might be what you're after.

There's the Madhur Jaffrey one? I made it several years ago and loved it -

SS, lovely recipe! Am now wondering if I could bottle it the same as I would any other chuts rather than keep it in the fridge. May also try adding some chopped toms right at the end, just to heat through so they retain their shape and texture. YUM!
Here's a pic of some chutneys, my runner bean chutney is piccalilli tasting, but not too thick or strong thank goodness.
WOW!
Quote from: jennymmy runner bean chutney is piccalilli tasting
I think it's the turmeric that does it. It has a "perfumey" flavour that I don't much care for.
hells bells Jen, that looks very professional! Let's see a close up of your labels. ;)
Jenny. Agree with others... WOW that is a great sight
Ber-limey!
That's a lot of chutneys...
moonbells (who can't make any more cos no more jars :( )
EJ - I happened across this recipe for a tomato relish:-
http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/relishes/01/rec0144.html (http://www.recipesource.com/side-dishes/relishes/01/rec0144.html)
I haven't got round to trying it yet - but I certainly will!!!

Thanks for the kind comments folks, much appreciated. :)
Supersprout ~ does the label say bread and butter pickle, if so, please enlighten us....
hi tilts, ty for asking :)
got receep from the KG website, from lovely Tigger who is possibly EJ's Secret Twin ;)
Very simple and turns out lovely and 'clean' - just started the first pot :P
‘Bread and Butter’ pickle
3 large cucumbers.
3 tbs salt.
4 onions - sliced.
1 pint white vinegar (I used white balsamic and white wine vinegar)
6 ozs sugar.
1 tsp celery seed.
2 tsp mustard seed.
Place the sliced cuccumbers, salt and sliced onions in a bowl. Stand for an hour. Pour off the brine and rinse well. Drain. Heat the vinegar, sugar, celery and mustard seed. Dissolve the sugar. Boil for 3 minutes.
Pack the vegetables into the jars and seal with the hot vinegar.
Store for 3 months before opening.
PS quite a job finding celery seed, eventually found at Julian Graves ::)
My thanks to all of you... for such lovely recipes, label ideas, and the inspiration to get up and give 'preserving' a bash.
:D
Top - Pickled green chillies, black mango chutney
Middle - Pickled green tomatoes, Nancy's Grandma's Apple Chutney, Sweet Chilli Jelly
Bottom - Beetroot chutney, pickled beetroot, pulp marrow and ginger jam, apple and ginger jam.
