Post by: Bambi.1 on September 08, 2005, 13:16:05
I have grown this Avocado from a stone about 5yrs ago,l left it out last winter with it's winter coat on  ;) it's around 4ft now,but my question is...............will it ever provide any Avacado's in the future  ??? or do l need another one to help with fertilization  ???

Wow that is one mighty good looking Avocado !  I am not sure if it bears fruit and how long after it is established.  Will try and google around - If I find an answer, I will let you know.

:D

Having googled myself, the avocado can set its own fruit, although another tree will help with pollination . . .

Hope this helps!

It's a fine looking specimen!

I believe they need to be pretty huge before they fruit. something like 20ft tall, I think.

Your tree brings back memories of when I lived in Cape Town and we had a massive avocado tree in the front garden.  It produced so much fruit we couldn't give it all away...   someone told me then that we had a female tree and that there must be a male tree within a quarter mile (?) to fertilize it.

Good luck!

Bambi
I'm not over-optimistic I'm afraid :(.
We have a potted one that is about 2 feet high at the moment so I was fascinated to see some at West Dean when we visited the chili fiesta recently.  They were growing theirs in huge pots inside a huge greenhouse, and the trees were about 6 to 8 feet tall.  None of them showed any signs of fruit :'(.
Having said that, I suppose they wouldn't be growing them if they didn't reckon they would get a result..... but I haven't got a huge greenhouse or conservatory, so I doubt I'll ever get avocados.
If that's a south-facing wall in your photo and you can protect the plant every winter, you never know. :-\
