Title: Garlic Seeds
Post by: gingerwomble on September 07, 2005, 14:02:07
Hi all - great site by the way. Just got my new plot this year so I am still in the trial and error stage (have grown some fantastic weeds!).
I have just picked my Elephant Garlic and I am really pleased with the results. Some of the shoots have flowered and some are still a whole pod. Does anyone know if I can obtain next years seeds from these pods, and if so, how do I store them.

Many Thanks

Rich

you use the cloves to re plant not the seeds or else it will take years to get any garlic!

Many Thanks for the advice Gayle. :)

Seems to have got some other 'wind up' comments - thought the web-site said don't be afraid to ask! - don't think I'll bother again! :(

Don't be afraid to ask, but always remember to bring your sense of humour :D

That's the problem with forums, email etc, there's no tone of voice + what one person writes in good humour another takes as insults.

Stick around + you'll get some good advice, hopefully have some laughs, but be warned, all these healthy homegrown veg do seem to turn us a little looby at times - we all have our funny 5 mins, just some more than others!

Congrats on the Elephant Garlic, I have just planted some red cloves in pots and am waiting to see what happens. Did you prepare the soil or just put them in? I am not sure what type they best thrive in.
Stay with the site, just give as good as you get cos they're a great bunch.

Oh ginger don't be daft.  We aren't winding up at all.  Kev B was just doing that daft garlic bread thing that Peter Kay does.  I'm sure you've heard of it.  So I was just smiling in response to that  :)

You can ask away on here.  There are some smart alecs on here - you get them everywhere but the real EXPERTS give answers without being too techy or patronising so don't worry you'll get the info you want without being made to feel a berk  :) :)
Rich  We have loads of newbies on here (we were all newbies once) and we had to learn somewhere.  Some of us never learn at all I think you'll find as we keep ordering and sowing far too many lettuces we can cope with even though we swear we never will again  ;D

You do that Rich  :)  Nothing like a visit to the lotty to straighten your head out.  Mind you it would take more than one visit to sort mine out  ;D

Last year some of my garlic went to seed.  I waited for the seeds to mature and dry off.  I then harvested them and kept them in a cool place for a month or so.  Around October I scattered them with a light covering of soil and hey presto, next year up came the garlic - smallish bulbs but really powerful stuff.  I mixed them with Olive oil and it made a great cooking aid - best of all it was free!

Well done you.  It's lovely isn't it  - home grown garlic.  Hmmmm.  You get a lovely smell off it don't you if you keep it in your shed and everytime you go to the plot and open the shed you get that lovely smell all over again  :)
