Title: Cement burns!
Post by: Palustris on September 03, 2005, 13:20:41
A Warning
I have been making some hyper-tufa rocks for a new project. I have been working on this for about 4 months so this is not something new. I usually do about half an hours work with cement and coir and sand and water. I can make about 5 rocks in this time. They dry out in Summer over night and can be removed from the moulds and wire brushed to give a less artificial appearance.
When mixing the stuff I always wear gloves.
This morning I removed yesterdays making as usual and thought nothing of it.  As the stuff was dry ish I did not bother with gloves. When I had finished my finger tips felt very sore and when I looked the skin had gone!
Very quickly I went in and washed them in running water for about 20 minutes as recommended. They are now covered and anti-burns creamed.
The burn has only penetrated the first layer of skin, but it is still a bit worrying as these kinds of burns can lead to permanent skin problems.
So if you are doing any work with cement take great care, it can cause damage even when nearly dry!

Hi Palustics
Yes cement can burn you really bad.
