Title: Finally got my plot!
Post by: vaca on September 02, 2005, 22:40:54
I've been waiting for a month and the tenancy agreement finally arrived today :) and it's free until April as it's a little overgrown :D and I was told that I could start working on it as soon as the agreement was posted ;D a bit too much excitement for one day!!!

I spent several hours this afternoon strimming and two kids aged 11 asked me to go in when they saw me open the gate, I hesitated but they seemed to be genuinley nice kids. They came in and actually were quite great help  :D they helped me carry the tools and wheelbarrow, helped put together a compost bin with palets and collected loads of grass for composting  :)

They had never been inside the allotments before and as soon as they came in one said 'I know what this is, it's a farm'!! They then called me farmer all day and they called themselves little farmers. They asked for some seeds, but unfortunately didn't have any  :( and when I asked one of them what he wanted to do when he grew up he said... I what to do what you do  :D

...what a great start!!!

Good for you! I got my first plot this time of year too, and as the weather gets a little cooler it's easier to do the heavy work needed to clear it. Do cover parts of it for winter to stop weeds re-appearing or to kill off weeds though, you'll find this a great help.

Congrats on your new lottie.  Don't do too much strimming today as it's going to be very warm (apparently)

I'm stuck indoors today but my OH is on the plot knocking posts in  or some such pointless exercise  ;D

Great fun to be had!  Remember that it's fun and not life and death.  One of the first jobs should be to clear an area to sit and think.  Shed with water butt should be a priority too as even a little rain can soon fill a butt and save you loads of lugging about

Enjoy yourself  :)

Vaca, if they're going to be that much help I'd promise them seeds and a patch on the plot  :)  It's more work than my OH does  ;D

Have fun!

gayle, I live in London and the allotments are in Wembley - not the safest of places, so I was really surprised when they turned out to be so well behaved, one of them was specially interested and asked loads of questions about composting, etc. a real pleasure!!

wardy... too late for the advice  :P ... spent all morning striming and by the end I was a wreck - the sun was really starting to go to my head  ::)  I stopped at 2pm and went back home only to return later on to dig a bed up, I'm determined to get some of my seedlings transplaned before the end of the weekend. Have decided to only dig up 1/4 of the plot and cover the rest, so 3 more beds to dig up :)

Don;t forget we get lovely evenings as well so there's no need to slog yourself to death during the heat of the day.  Pace yourself as you don't want to get injured, over tired or sun stroke  :)  I like to go to my plot in the evening if only for pottering.
