Allotments 4 All

I want to grow some Rhubarb on my new plot and have been offered some seeds (from a reliable source).

I know the usual approach is to buy crowns, but money is in short supply and the seeds are MUCH cheaper.

So, my question is, has anyone grown it from seed with success - all the books seem to say its difficult and its better to get crowns.

I grew my rhubarb from seed about 3 years ago. It has been wonderfully successful. Had a crop the same season. My dad has grown rhubarb for years from crowns, but he's been gobsmacked by how prolific this has been. If I ever need more, I'll go the seed route every time. Hope this helps. Lottie

I am a newbie to lottie growing and have failed with crowns and have succeeded with rhubarb seeds, I think the secret is with the soil preparation, I have to say the plants are in their first year and looking good, hopefully we will be consuming them next year. ;D

Ditto that, I sowed seeds in spring this year, they germinated easily and now are plants that will be ready for harvesting next spring.  

Odd because all the books etc say that they rarely make good plants.  Of course I havent eaten any yet...

I started mine off from seed this year and now that I've found them under the bind weed, they seem to be fine.
They are Glaskins Perpetual from Kings Seeds

Thanks everyone - I shall give it a go! Still trying to dig the couch/bindweed/docks/nettles out of the bed at the moment anyway  ;D

Have bought some seeds to grow next season am now looking forward to planting them in the spring. have a plant that a friend gave me years ago and i get loads of rhubarb and i end the year by giving the last lot to the kids harvest festival at school. bought the seeds to try a different variety.

I didn't know you could grow it from seed  ??? l bought a crown earlier in the year with a small leaf on it,put it in the ground,the leaf disappeared and nothings happened since  :'( :'( l'm just hoping it's not dead  >:(

Must get seeds next time l visit the garden centre  ;D

bought my seeds on ebay, it's sooooo easy.

Bambi, this is by no means the "right" way, but worked for me! Just made drill in ground with edge of hoe, sowed seed, covered and they grew..... LOL! Hope this helps! Lottie   ;D

I've got half a dozen gorgeous plants grown from seed this year and given to me by a fellow allotment holder - if the seed's from a reputable company then why shouldn't it do well?
