Thanks to all for looking and taking part, my sister-in-law (she doesn't have a calculator) was so sure that her 5000 was correct. Well it was a bit of a giggle on a wet afternoon AND the fact that I have been standing and doing my ironing for the last two hours made me in need of a smile.  ::) Lorna.

Actuaaaarly  ;D

1000 x 4 = 4000
40 + 10 = 50
30 + 20 = 50
50 + 50 = 100
4000+100 = 4100

That's how we teach it nowadays.  Yours was still impressive.  I forgot everything I teach (it has been five weeks  ;D) and got 5000  ???.  Debbie you will be pleased to know got 4100 doing it the same way as pntalbot.

Redclanger my late husbands niece and her husband both teach in Malvern . I haven't had reply to my email yet!! Perhaps they are still working it out ;D In fairness she does take a couple of weeks to answer my mail , maybe we will try it out on 10year old grandsons teacher when he returns to school. It was a bit of fun  Lorna.
