Post by: kelso on August 24, 2005, 11:53:39
What's the best way to remove recently cut tree stumps?

Hi Miers
You need to use a stump grinder don't know if you can hire or not.
If a small stump then dig it out.

Tree surgeons charge around £10 per stump to grind them out.

You can also buy some stuff with a name like stump be gone or summit! put it on the stump and cover with plastic.

HDRA say this

It is called Rootout!

You can try, when you have one, burning your bonfire on top of it. Cheap.

Hi Miers,
How you remove it depends on what you want to do with the area when it is gone.
Did you want it flat to the ground or do you want to plant there?
Some tree surgeons will charge more then a tenner, especially if the stump is in stoney ground. this is because the replacement teeth for their grinders cost a bob or two.
You can try drilling holes into the stump top and pouring petrol into the holes. I am told this is effective but takes a while.
Or you could do what my neighbours did with a huge old tree in the middle of their garden, dug a huge hole around the stump and then swung an axe at the roots for the best part of the day. Then you are only left with the problem of lifting out the root and getting rid. though this could be a problem in itself.
Good luck  ;)

Depends on the size of the stump! i have in the past dug out apple trees etc but if its a big un i'd let the pro's have a go. Less hassle.
