Hi folks. This plant was given to a friend of mine as a seedling. He was told it was Gypsophilia but we don't think so!  :o
It's getting on for 5' high and has leaves rather like a Datura. Any ideas what it might be?

sunflower
My goodness I think you could be right. The leaves are nothing like the sunflowers I've grown before but the head is exactly right. Thanks so much. :D

Jearusilum (SP) Artichoke maybe.... havnt ever grown though..
It looks like Jerusalem artichoke, which looks a lot like a sunflower because it is, being a Helianthus and all. Jerusalem Artichoke are tuberous though. ???.
But the Helianthus family is enormous, so it could be any one of scores of plants.
The leaves are very sunflower like though - if a little larger than usual - but the height would indicate a sunflower!
Hmmm...I thought artichoke too but having never grown them I was only going on the flower head. I suspect we'll have to wait for the flower to come out?

Yup im saying sunflower. Anyone taking bets? ;D

I say it is definately a
helianthus of some kind.
defo sunflower
I'd guess Jerusalem artichoke, since they flower later than 'normal' sunflowers and have small daisy-sized flowers. the but on this looks very small for a sunflower.
Not Jerusalem artichoke. The leaves on that are much greyer-green and have a smooth outline. I would guess some form of Sunflower. I would have posted a picture of J.A. but hopefully I have managed to dig them all out and there are none at present in the area!
yES, i WILL GO FOR SUNFLOWER TOO

Jerusalem Artichoke
is 'some form of Sunflower'
:P
Oh and I wouldn't put much faith in the colouring of a digital image, digital cameras cannot see colour, and it is made up through a mozaic of tiny coloured lenses--this means digital colour is normally innacurate at the input stage. Then the colours may change during the downloading to a PC, as Windows has horrendous colour managment -- additionally the colour I see on my monitor is likely to be very different from on yours, dependant on each monitors calibration.
Oh Amphibian, can we please not start a row in this thread? I was just trying to help a mate out in trying to identify a plant. All views are vadid, let's not get hung up on the technology.

Definitely a sunflower. We had one too, just popped up from nowhere, no seed was planted. It looked like a weed at first but larger so we left it just to see what happened. It grew and grew to about 5'5" and it now has a beautiful yellow face!
yip its a sun flower got to be
How about posting a pickie of the flower, is it out yet? ;)
It came out yesterday. Just waiting for friend to send pic then all will be revealed. ;) ;D

Well done to everyone who said sunflower.  ;D

Wow, if you have any seeds going spare ... Love that colour ;D
It's wonderful, isn't it? I'll ask my mate to save some if he can and let you know. :)
G xx
That's gorgeous! Want one! Like burnt cinnamon....
Okay Lottie, I'll put you down for some seed too, shall I? :D
G xx
Good news folks. My mate has saved some of the seed heads which are drying in his shed. Please send me a PM if you'd like some.  :)

Yes indeed Flowerlady, but can you trust the colour in the picture? ;D
BTW Amphibian, Windows Color System is on it's way as part of the next Windows operating system (Vista). Not an ICC compliant colour-managed workflow but better than what they have now.
Tony.
Right oh, wardy. ;D
