thought i might ask the basket queen for some help :)
do you have any suggestions for winter hanging baskets?
i haven't made one up for this time of year ~ so i thought i'd seek some advice from an expert :)
Not Lottie, but I find a mixture of small bulbs, primulas and pansies works very well. Don't like ivy much, although that would add a nice foil.
that sounds lovely R-M~gives me an excuse to go shopping ;D ;D
A pleasure ;D ;D
Oh Gawd, GW!! Having probs coming up with new ideas myself!! But this is the list I'm working from - Evergreen ferns, cordylines survived well, Euonymus, dwarf conifers, winter pansies, underplant with bulbs (dwarf narcissi), primroses, that black grass (Ophiopogon nigrescens), periwinkle, ivies, last year I used heathers, been training Ajuga to trail down, hope this helps. Â Thank you for thinking of me, by the way!!! Â ;D Lottie
excellent stuff L~lots to think about :)thanks
Phew!!! ;D Lottie
Could I be so bold as to add the smaller evergreen grasses, heucheras & I had a really good display one year which included some golden variegated thyme.
Oh yes, Beejay, love Heuchera!!! Have some left over as well!! ;) Thanks. Lottie ;D
I agree with ajuga! It's a great container plant. Mine is in an old toilet cistern and it's flowered constantly for months and the foliage is brilliant purple :) It's finished flowering but I just snipped the flowers off and the foliage is still beautiful. Doesn't mind shade either or full sun. I'm on a windy site and it doesn't seem to mind that either. Mine is with a bit of ivy would it would look good with tiarella or heuchera :)
I used ornamental kale last year - they looked amazing.
Quotesmaller evergreen grasses, heucheras & golden variegated thyme.
lovely :)
i'm spoilt for choice now ;D ~ thanks folks ;D
You must be reading my mind I was thinking about them this morning. I don't want the pansies...although I love them they never seem to do well so thought I might try something different this year. Lots of lovely ideas there, do primulas flower in the winter or is it more spring? Also find the ornamental oranges...I can't remember the name, it has orange berries in winter...that looks good in a pot.
Hi Lottie
you must try the ornamental cabbage if they have them in your area?? they last for months and you can get white and purple. they are brilliant as the centre piece when surrounded with a few pansies.
Good Luck
Kev
Thanks Kev, may well do. Have couple of floor pots to do too, think they'd look good in that. This is one I prepared earlier.....heather is about to bloom, brought it in for hair cut!!!! :o Lottie ;D

Hi Lottie
(one I prepared earlier) are you off Blue Peter? :D I've never used fern and ivy together, are they underplanted with crocus or anything. When you say about to "bloom" do you mean new growth? Cheers Kev
Hey Kev, they're underplanted with dwarf narcissi and a couple of spring flowering cyclamen. Just mean they're about to bloom? Don't know any other way to describe it!! I loved Blue Peter, never had a badge though, and as others know, had a thing for John Noakes for years (or was it Peter....mmmm ???). But to tell truth, been nurturing this for several weeks, will go up as soon as summer one looks a bit ropey. Lottie ;D
Val I grew some Heritage polyanthus from seed (Chartreuse from Fothergills) they are absolutely beautiful. They flowered for months in clay pots on my windowsill. I put them out in the garden a few weeks ago and they're in flower again. They'd be lovely in baskets and pots.
Hi Wardy, thanks, think I will try those with a bit of green this year. The ornamental cauli's go to seed very quickly as well. think it might be to warm for them, at least the last 2 years they've gone over. Its all trial and error.
Here they are
They're lovely, Wardy. Lottie ;D
Oh they look lovely, I see the bees like them too, another plus , so they will be ready and waiting for the bees next year.
Great ideas, just what I've been looking for. I like the fern and ivy basket lottie, think I'm going to make something like that. :)
Thank you! I'm going to include some polyanthus in the others, think they'd look lovely. Post pics when done, would love to see. Lottie ;D
I made one up today, includes fern, trailing ivy, cyclamen, mini daffodils (bulbs) and violas. Thanks for the ideas :)
Bet it'll look gorgeous, look forward to pic. Lottie ;D
I'll take a photo tomorrow, my little girl started school today so I used up the batteries taking photos of her in her uniform, she looks oh so sweet ;D
Awwww, bless! Did you shed a tear? I was awful when my first started school, took a hanky and sat in car having a sob after!! How did she get on? Hope she had a good day. By the time it got to no 4, was hurling them out of car while still moving....... ;) Lottie ;D
No, didn't shed a tear but did feel a bit tearful for all of about 15 minutes until I got to the garden centre ;D She's my second so a little easier than the first one. She loved her day at school, it was only from 1pm -3pm and will be all this week, then next week until christmas it's 8.45 - 11.45. It's going to be great to have some spare uninterrupted allotment time :)
I remember getting really confused when Jack was part-time! They were morning one day, afternoon the next...didn't know whether I was coming or going!! Nothing new there then.... ;D Lottie

Don't mind us, but wouldn't it be simpler to email each other, i feel like an eavesdropper!! Can we get back to the baskets???
That's what makes this site so enjoyable KevB, the fact that people get along so well and it's not strictly moderated, try to enjoy it. :)
I'll take a photo of the basket in a minute, just waiting for the batteries to charge ;) :)
Here's the photos, there are also some mini daffodil bulbs in there...can't remember the colour now, think I chose a white variety. The fern is quite small but with a little growth it should look nice I think. :)

That's a beauty :) I noticed that my tray of Ultima pansies is already flowering so I must get them pricked out! I really am lazy. I have an empty chimney pot so they're destined for that. I don't do hanging baskets as they get blown about too much so tend to keep things at ground level.
Wow, that looks so pretty.
Thanks, I don't generally like pansies or violas but these were so pretty. Wardy, lazy, you? no way, I cheated and bought these from the garden centre :-[ :D

I truly understand your point about friendliness, but is it really essential to take up a full page with chit chat, there's a room there purposely dedicated to chat!!
Hope you take this in the manner it is meant!! Kevb
:)
love your arrangement L :)
very pretty indeed J :)~love the white cyclamen~yum :)

Don`t let us start another wind up, about who says what and where, chat away girls i am enjoying reading about the children starting school. ;D ;D
The baskets look lovely, and Wardy you are never lazy you are always so busy.
KevB I can imagine you sitting there scrolling through all the chit chat getting right tetchy, muttering about cutting to the chase ;D
Patience ;D
Yes leave them alone Kev...crouchy old so and so ;) you sound like Victor Meldrew. Its not as bad as the posting on the beeb, nuff said.
oops forgot to say what I posted for...basket is really beautiful I love the colour. :D
Ok! Ok! Having reread my comments I do sound a "little" Victor Mildrew! :) :)
but i could have sworn the W.I. was next door!! (Only Kidding) I've reached that tetchy age of the big 50, so my apologies to all concerned!! there now I've said it!! :) :) :)
Cheers Kev
You'll soon get into our old biddy groove Kev. Just let it wash over you and go with the flow. You'll soon become as laid back as us. Honestly we are dead mellow :)
We do get stuff done though ;D
Consider yourself a full fledged member, Kev. How's the knitting coming??? ;) I'm in process of trying to identify half my veg.. ::) ::) ::) Lottie
Wait till you get to the near 60 Kev. You'll even forget what it is you want to moan about so it sounds like you're in pain, still there is a bonus, you might have all the young things rushing to your aid. ;)
Val. What about us poor old b---rs Sorry meant blighters who have gone past the 70 mark. Then again you should have seen me at the big SURPRISE party my kids organized on Sat, people from around the country turned up.. Lorna
Glad it wasn't pink and on fire!! :o :o :o Lottie
Hi
I saw a hanging basket at the weekend that had grass coming out of the holes in the side of the basket (Stipa tenuissima Pony Tails ). has anybody tried this? will it last over winter? and could the grass get to big (i.e. wide) that it would damage the basket. Thanks in advance.
Regards
MikeB
Hey Mike, sounds gorgeous, lovely looking grass. It is a perennial, I think, and I slowly comb the dying stems out. But supposed to be cut back for best new growth. It does go a lovely yellow colour as we head into autumn. Think it may get a bit of a bashing over winter. As for size, I imagine that if you left it in for years may get bit big, but would take a while. You know what's coming.......! Try it, nothing ventured nothing gained!!!! Let us know. Lottie ;D
Will do.
Thanks
MikeB
KevB I swear that my husband is Homer Simpson. If I go out and he has to look after himself he gets comfy in front of the telly with the dog sitting in the chair with him. He gets the lagers out, then the cheese and biscuits and trifle :o Any food which ends up down his tee shirt he lets the dog lick off ;D ;D ;D
It's a good job us ladies are about to provide a civilising influence :)

Your hubby could well be my long lost twin!! :) No doubt whatsoever that my better half would totally agree with you! only thing is we dont have a dog, so i get the bits for dessert!! Cheers
My old man and dog lurrrrve strong Cheddar and most Friday nights can be seen squashed up in the chair together with crackers, cheese, butter dish, lager and RED WINE, chomping and slurpring to their hearts content. My husband gives the dog a bit of red wine off the end of his finger ;D
The area round my husband's chair resembles that of Father Jack (Father Ted). Last week he fell asleep with a glass of red wine in his hand and spilled it all over the place. Grrrrrrrrrrr >:(
Onslow is another chap who reminds me of the old man ;D

Lorna...sounds like you had a great time ;D ;D..its okay at that age you get away with anything and as you're in your second childhood, which for me starts now, its play with a vengence.
;D ;D ;D ::)
