Title: Turnip tops.
Post by: Looby Loo on August 18, 2005, 15:21:35
I've been told that turnip tops, wilted like chard or spinach are especially good. I've planted a few rows just for the tops (not all that fussed about the turnip itself I'm ashamed to say) but I'm unsure as to when I can start harvesting them. At the moment they are about 8"-10" tall. Can I start picking them now or should I let them grow on a bit..I'm intrigued to try them is all.

You can eat them any time, I think younger is better, but they are a bit coarse. Wouldn't bother with them again. You can also put in salads if you must. (You can tell I wasn't impressed, can't you!)
Much, much nicer to eat are young beetroot leaves. Lightly steamed or stir-fried. Try them, you'll get hooked.

Thank you, I'll give the turnip tops a go tomorrow. Thanks for the tip about the beetroot leaves too. :)
