Title: Tomato Leaves. What's the problem?
Post by: Maude on August 16, 2005, 17:14:23
Hello all

I've been lurking for some time and now I need some help please.

Yet another tomato question.  I have a horrible feeling that this might be blight.  The plants are in gro bags and have been growing well so far, have even eaten some of the crop, but the leaves have now become discoloured with brown patches. The under side of the leaves seem OK at the moment and this is only happening to the lower leaves(so far)!

Am I destined to make buckets of green tomato chutney before the worst sets in?

Could be tomato blight have heard that is brown and patchy, i would cut the leaves that are affected off. Someone else on here might have a better idea as I am quite new to gardening.

Phew!

Many thanks Tim. From your posts I know you are a seasoned tomato grower. What a fantastic green house by the way, I can but dream. Should I just give them a bit of a feed to perk them up?

Does this make you feel better?

Feed? One assumes that you feed them at least weekly - full strength - or daily if diluted?

Sorry - photo missed on the first post!

This is perfectly normal discolouration, chill

It's a common discolouration, and looks like manganese deficiency. Balanced feed with trace elements will cure this, also epsom salts. But if not widespread, I wouldn't worry.

Thanks for your replies, and your photo Tim.  I shall continue to give them a weekly feed and wait for a bumper crop! I was given the self sown plants so I shall have to wait and see what varieties they are.

Tim. you're right. I have (or, rather, did have) a database here which I find is now mixed up. Lots of blushes. It's not magnesium and probably not manganese either. I know quite a lot about fruit but not so much about tomatoes, so think I'll creep away quietly now and study.  :-[

I remember children teething...  :'(
Just find now that as I get older, I seem to need far less sleep. Also get a lot of work done in the mornings.
Here it's very misty - visibility about 50 ft. First time this year. Still its been hot all week, musn't grumble.
