Title: New Worm
Post by: Derekthefox on August 14, 2005, 18:41:06
My eldest son, computer whizzo, informed me this afternoon that a new worm has found its way onto the internet. This worm is immune to all except the latest ms security updates, and so is affecting significant portions of the internet, as most business systems are dormant until after the weekend. He has been watching its penetration over the weekend in live time. MSN has been affected, I have experienced numerous outages during messenger chats etc. over this weekend. I originally put these down to maintenance.

I presume Dan would know if A4A has been directly affected, or whether it is just slowed as a knock on effect.

No more details are available at the moment.

Is a worm virus one of those nasty things that gets into your address book and sends stuff plus itself to everyone of your contacts?

A good few months ago I read in a magazine of a little trick that could be employed to stop that happening. By adding a false address at the head of your address list it stopped the virus going any further.

Listed in my Address Book as 'Worm Alert' all you do is put the following as the address

!000      (Exclamation mark and three zero's)

I checked it out with a computer literate colleague who agreed it should work so I added it...I seem to have had no problems at all...mind you my safeguard systems may have stopped it getting there anyway... didn't cost me anything to add it so there it stays
