I would like to attract hedgehogs to my Lottie for the purpose of Slug control and also I love the little Spikey "grunters".
I have made a suitable Hog House which I have placed under a particularly overgrown Hawthorn bush at the edge of my lottie. The box has been there for 3 months now but no Piggies.
Any advice apart from placing an ad in the local paper for homeless Hoggies ;D
Yeah, you and me both dingerbell, I want a hedgehog in my garden. Just coz I like 'em. I have made a hedgy home with all the correct hole sizes. Lay out peanuts (that the foxes and squirrels nick) Put out meaty cat food in the hedgy house, but it remains uneaten and gets thrown away. Any ideas folk (I am in Sarf West London).
'ad one 18 mths ago, stayed for 10 days, ain't seen 'im since :( :( :(
I've got two hedgies, who turned up completely unexpectedly. The first one arrived a couple of weeks ago, to pinch peanuts from an old bird feeder that I'd put on the ground and forgotten about ;D
Once I realised I had a hedgie, I started putting food and water out in little dishes, and another one turned up about a week ago ;D
The first one seems to be a large adult (probably male) and the second one is much smaller and I think she might be a very young female.
The reason I think this is because the two hedgies have met at the food dish and after some initial indignant snuffling and snorting from the large one, he backs off and lets the small one eat.
If it was a young male, I'm not sure the big hedgie would be so tolerant ???
We actually bought a hedgie box yesterday, and I've left it under my Mock Orange as both hedgies seem to sit under there for short periods.
I've put some straw in it and will leave any prunings/dead leaves there as Summer progresses into Autumn, and hopefully one of the hedgies will spend the Winter with me :)
I think you just have to be patient, don't you? :(
This is a picture of the small hedgie that I took over the weekend ;D

wow..!! lucky you bunnycat, thanks for the picture :) :) :)
With a bit of the luck, the pitter patter of tiny feet next spring :)
I remember reading somewhere that if you site the box near to a decaying woodpile, where a lot of their natural food is , that can help - or alternatively you could site a rotten log pile near the box! I'm in rural North Yorkshire and we have quite a few round heare - would send some if I could!
Good luck!
Have you ever seen hedgehogs in your area, as there just might not be any hedgehogs in the area to attract to your garden ? Have you an enclosed garden as if so it would be virtually impossible for a hedgehog to find it's way in.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society are running a rescue mission at the moment and are looking for homes for rescued hedgehogs from the Isle Of Uist of the Western Scottish coast. If you do have a suitable garden you could contact them as they have "hedgehog carers" in most areas of the country, one could be in your area and they could put you in touch with them maybe to take one of the rescued hedgehogs, always worth a thought if you want a hedgehog for your garden. If you want more details get back to me. I've made a wildlife area in the corner of my plot where I'm going to let the weeds do their thing. I've got a pile of laburnum logs there too so hopefully before too long I might get some hedgehogs. I could do with some at the moment as slugs are eating my squashes :(
