Title: Seed Potatoes
Post by: redcow on August 12, 2005, 13:55:28
I would like to plant some potatoes now. Does anyone have any ideas on varieties and where I can get them from???

I have looked on Dobies website and couldn't find any - probably looking in the wrong place, but did request a catalogue.

Any tips for planting ect.... My plot is on a slope so it is quite wet in the bottom. Where should I plant them???  ???

Might be too late to get them - Dobies last order was 7 August. I sent off for some but haven't recieved them (though have been charged) - am hoping they're lurking in post office or will be unimpressed.

My order (from KG magazine) arrived today - but they sent a different variety than those I ordered due to cold store problems. Perhaps Dobies have cold store problems too?

Received mine yesterday.
Overordered and got 2kg of Carlingford and 2kg of Maris Peer.
Planted 25 Carlingford and still have 18 left.
Haven't planted any of the Maris Peer so will have at least 20 left if anyone near Tolworth or Kingston wants them.

Hi/ received our potatoes today from Marshalls with no instructions (we are new at all this!). Does anyone know whether we can plant them as they are or whether we have to chit them? If we do have to chit them how do we do it!

Trying for the first time myself this year - so absolutely  no expert but when the Dobies site had the pots they also had instructions up - basically, plant as soon as possible, don't chit. Prone to blight so beware-(as others on this site have said) - and be prepared to spray at first sign of foliage. Earth up as normal.. Thats what I seem to remember anyway. HTH .

Trenchboy, I have pm'd you about your spare spuds ;)

I also ordered some from Fothergills, but I think that I managed to get them on the last day of ordering  :o  Newbie's luck?

I really need to dig some more beds don't I?

I fancied some of those Carlingfords but too many in a pack - only need a few.  I'm holding back some early Arran Pilot and will have a go at growing those from Crimble dinner  :)

Hi Bupster -

How do you know when they got sent?  More to the point, does this mean I need to accelerate my digging on that new potato bed of mine??  :o

I phoned them up! They said that the first lot had gone out a while ago but because I only ordered on the 8th of August mine would have only been sent out yesterday - though when they'll arrive I don't know. They were really helpful though.

Cool, thanks :)  I ordered on the 5th so hopefully mine are on the way too.

I really WILL have to work hard on the digging tonight.

Yes... I felt so guilty about chewing the ear of Dobies instead of Fothergills  :-[ that I've now ordered the brassica collection. I've only had the plot ten days. Oop.

Also, inspired by some of the others on this site, started my own blog when I should have been writing about obscure Lebanese politicians. So even less time than before. D'oh. :D

Thanks for your advice about not bothering with chitting. We'll plant them as they are and see how it goes!
