Title: Cheapest Fleece/ netting?
Post by: Mubgrub on August 09, 2005, 17:41:35
Where is the cheapest place to buy fleece or protection netting?

When not making do with old net curtains (from charity shops and house clearance agents) I have bought big rolls of plant/ground cover from http://www.plasticsbypost. net.
You could search on http://www.Froogle.co.uk for 'horticultural fleece'. You can get online price comparisons and some useful horticultural suppliers, even tho it takes a bit of patience to get the search right. You might be able to share the cost of a big roll with some of your neighbours? :D
For small quantities cut off the roll I have found family garden centres and seed merchants cheaper than e.g. B&Q and Wyevale.
Hope this helps, thanks for starting this thread ...

Tim, I agree, they are cheap and I've found them reliable.

But what width? This can vary from 1m -3 m - at least.

I bought cheapo fleece from Wilko but it practically disintegrates in your hand!  It rips at the least provocation which is absolutely no good when you need it to withstand more than a mild draught.  It blew away in the end.  Good riddance  ;D         So if I buy any more it will be the strongest I can find  :)

I got my black sheet mulch and an off cut of pond liner from www.allplaz.co.uk or it could be allplas  :)

I have just bought 2 lots of 10m x 2m green netting from Ebay and noticed the same seller has more for sale.  The auction ends today at 18.17 hours so worth a bid!
Item number is 7719537087
There's 29 lots available (different sizes I think) and the bidding is at 99p at the moment.  Postage depends on what you buy.  My postage came to £8.75.

Good luck!

Fleece? It seems that 'the cheapest' is sometimes a rip-off?

Ours from Kays is still going after 5 years.

Yes, I picked up the Kays link and they are v. cheap for fleece, but best of all you get a choice of sizes (widths) depending on how you want to use it. For my 1.25m beds, I got 3.25m wide fleece so it can 'grow' with my plants  ;D. Make sure you anchor it well or you will get lots of exercise after gales running to the next county :P

I'm going to get some enviromesh and try that in place of fleece.

I was going to try enviromesh too, but it's cheaper at the organic catalogue than kays, especially if you're a member.

1. I'm missing something? I make Organic about twice the price of Kay's? EG 2mx4.5m=£17.25 against 2mx10m+£21.50?

2. But - always remember that there are 2 grades of mesh - Kay's does NOT cope with carrot fly.Or so one gathers.

3. And, because of the cost, one does not like to cut mesh into sizes, especially because you then lose the bonded edges.

4. But mesh has many advantages over fleece.

So what are the benefits of enviromesh over fleece?  I have wondered about getting some of this.
