They eat decaying plant matter, and on the whole I'd say they're a good thing. They may possibly do occasional marginal damage, I'm not sure.

They need dark, damp places, so if you need to reduce the population then remove their hiding places. They do little damage in normal numbers outside, but in a greenhouse they can nibble off seedlings.

If you have a shed and crossbearers touch the ground at all as soon as said
crossbearer shows anysign of damp they will start nibbling but no worry it
would take em bout 5 years to make any significant damage.... watched  the guy
next doors fence slowly fall victim at my old place. I have eaten them on a
survival weekend thingy many many moons ago !!!!

needed ketchup I thought.... we wern't allowed ketchup :'(

I am from Devon originally, E. J. and they call them chuggy  PIGS  there.  i have also heard the term 'sow (as in female pig)  bug'  Still don't know if they are friend or foe for gardeners though!  ;)

Well that is it then shallot.  My family are from the fabulous north Devon coast, so I guess, over the years, it has changed from chuggypigs to choogypegs.  ;D

We call them chippy pigs ;D Or Ohms (like from Naussica!)

Mostly harmless but one dark night I did see a bunch of them chomping on my runner beans!

Woodlice in my honest opinion are armless (but not leggless :D)

They do provide food for birds and frogs and toads

Hey my tip dont sow seeds next to a rotting lod or shed :D

We call them "grammarsows" in Cornwall.

I was trying to talk to someone here in London the other day about them but I couldn't remember their "real" name.  He thought I was nuts  ::)
