Title: Hoorah At last!!!!
Post by: lorna on July 28, 2005, 11:42:53
I know I am probably later than most but yesterday I picked my first toms(gardeners delight) only two, but walking back down garden I ate them ;D They were delicious. Also I am now picking runners at last. So now have had taste of  my home grown Cucumbers. Toms and Runner Beans. When the rain stops (not complaining) I am going to start cutting down two more conifers which will make a bigger space for veg. Lorna.

Good on you Lorna  :)   I still have not eaten one of my own toms yet this year but they are there - just  ;D  Small pea size at the mo and not many of them.  The beef toms have not shown themselves at all  :(

Oh well  :)

Coooel Lorna!  I have had one ripe one from my allotment plants, 'tigerlla', and noticed today that I have a couple of trusses of yellow cherries, forgot to check the variety, just turning yellow!  Had 7 cucumbers now, much to number one daughter delight as she adores them.

7 cucumbers!!!  I'm beginning to feel inadequate.  No tomatoes at all and only 2 cues  ;D  I got my second cuke on the chopping board t'other day and OH says "have you been to the Co-op?"  Words fail me  :(

heheheh wardy!  Last year I think we only had one cuke, so I really tried harder this year as our daughter really does love them and eats them like apples!  Still, we are no where near as clever as Tim with his cucumber plantation, but there is always next year........ ;D

Hi EJ and Wardy.Must admit I have had a big grin on my face. Grandson (10) and friend who was having a sleepover ate half a cucumber between them before Lorna (jnr) could get tea ready. So that is why Nan ate the first two toms :) The sun is now shining again but a bit late in the day to start cutting down the conifers apart from the time I have been doing a friends books for about six hours today so gardening will have to be a miss..Thanks for your posts. Lorna.

Emma, dear - nothing clever - I just do the same old thing year on year!

You prompt me to count what we've had so far. For the squeamish, please look the other way!! I can't help it.

From 8 plants indoors -  first on 2 June - 211!!

PS Love the new photo!

I was going to say I'd got about 9 cues so far and took two to work today as I picked three this morning.

Then I read Tim's post.

Yikes - Tim, are they full size or mini ones? And what on earth do you do with so many?!

Aww thanks Tim, Derek and Lorna.  That is my dad's mum who we hadn't seen for nearly a year so we had a lovely day with her last weekend and took her to the crem where my darling dad is.

And as for you Tim, 211?  I mean!  Well....words fail me!  They do, fail me!!  A lot of Gazpacho soup in your house??

Moonbells - minis. More immediate & never any bits left in the fridge.

Use?
One a day to the lady opposite.
About 8 each week for the younger g'childrens' snacks & lunchboxes.
Visitors.
Rice & bulgar salads.
Raita & tzatziki.
Crudites.
Vegetarian Daughter's daily Tortillas & salads.
Cucumber sauce with chicken or fish.
Steamed with lemon sauce.
Delia's sweet cucumber pickle. The family's standby!

I can assure you, not one is wasted!!

my second cucumber is now a manly size ;D and ready for harvest this weekend. i had a couple of embryos fall off before that so am happy plant is producing again - am watering much more now - so maybe it was stress before.
need to get some feed, too.
one of my lottie neighbours has four plants and a much more regular picking than me. i think one cuc was a bit economical ;)
next year, eh?.......

Tim - I am deeply jealous now.  I have not had a single cue, my toms are pathetic, I'm an aubergine failure, I have given up on peas and my self blanching celery was not self watering and snuffed it.  I grow forked carrots and have forgotten to start loads of stuff so have missed the boat.  Am I downhearted ?  Will I give up ?  NAH !  After 18 mths lottying I'm hooked (and I did manage fennel last year so I am using that as a success mark)

Baggy I just can't believe this is all happening to you in lovely Kent. :o ; Blimey and to think I am cutting down conifers in the garden (no allotment) to make room to grow more veg ;D I will be like you and not give up. Happy gardening :) Lorna.
