Title: Garlic looks dodgy
Post by: DeniseK on July 27, 2005, 13:32:48
I'm new to the world of lottie toilings, and have 2 rows of Garlic (got carried away with the T&M catalogue) which seem to have rust and some other black fungus on them.  The bulbs look fine but a bit small. Are they OK to eat?  :-\

Small can be powerful.
Mine are all dug up now and drying out on racks in the greenhouse.
I would suggest that you could dig one plant, and if the cloves have the desired culinary effect, go and dig up all the rest!  The rust (probably) and mildew ( ???) won't make any difference if you can dig them up now; the mildew will rot the cloves if left in the ground (especially if you have any damp weather! :o).  Once the plants have dried off you will be able to store them OK.
