Title: Squirrel damage?
Post by: plot51A on July 26, 2005, 21:57:24
My beans are being munched - not just the beans, but stalks and growth as well. Strongly suspect the culprit is a squirrel - probably the one who runs away from my plot when I arrive!! He - or she - seems to like french beans, both dwarf and climbing - have had 3 of my climbers eaten through near the base. My frenchies are decimated - and they're one of my favourites. Also think its responsible for damage to my beetroot  some of which has been extensively nibbled, with a side snack of broad beans. Does anyone else have this problem and any suggestions?? Can't imagine putting a cage/protection over EVERYTHING - it's enough keeping brassicas and seedlings netted!

We have squiggles, but never known them do any damage on the plot.  The Jays ate my broad beans, and the slugs chew through my beans at ground level.  I suppose as you can't net everything, be like Fort Knox, then some sort of scarer, but what??  Come one squirrel experts!

We get a lot of fox damage. Potatoes strewn over the plot with claw marks and nibbles, also beetroot. Today, I found that they'd had a go at my pear tree, the two lowest fruits on the floor with same markings. Seems they have a sweet tooth.

I thought it was slugs at first EJ - but the pattern of damage seems a bit different. Could be wrong tho'. I break all my resolutions and principles where slugs are concerned - pellets are the only thing that seem to have any effect  :(
