you remember that film 'fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe'? do you think that fried, unripe green toms will be worth a try ? (or give you tummy ache :-\)
only i've got billions of green toms that show no signs of turning red and some have been on the vine for weeks!

As for them turning red, they will. It is still early for the main crop, cherry ones are turning now.

if you crave tomatoes now, go to the market and get some sweet smelling ripe ones that actually taste like tomatoes. avoid the supermarket like the plague :)
It is a bit early yet. An old lad down the allotments puts bannana skins at base of his plants. Just remember they're a tripping hazard.

Find a recipe for green tomato chutney - that gorgeous. You could either make that instead or use the ingredient list for inspiration. I doubt they would give you tummy ache.

If you are lucky enough to have an aga, then it will take on a wonderful dark rich colour, and the chillies Will have extra time to work their magic!
When my granddad was alive he used to rap the tomatoes in news paper then put them in the airing cupboard always worked for him.

It is still early depending on the variety. At the moment I have 3-4 big-boy variety which are big and very green. I also have two tumbling-toms in a hanging basket outside with pea-sized fruits which are now starting to turn red. I also have a couple of Cerise's in the green-house which are just starting to turn.
By far the best variety we found for an early crop is the totem F1's which are a bush variety with medium sized fruits. We've already had 4/5 fruits from this one and it's a nice compact plant which doesn't need much attention. Will be sowing more of those next year.
