Title: Planting out onions - too late?
Post by: Sam Spade on July 23, 2005, 22:02:46
I have a couple of rows of onions that I grew from seed that need planting out - I never got round to it before, partly because of lack of space, partly because I'm a bit of a donut! Would I get much of a result if I planted them out or should I leave them where they are for 'spring onions'.
I have to say that I am just harvesting a large batch of onions already now, and in spite of the draught they have been really good. The reds have bolted a bit - I wish I'd taken out the centre stem. But the yellow's/white's have  really bulked out.

I would be tempted to pop them in if you have space. Keep them well watered and you will get a couple of months growth out of them. Maybe not huge onions but certainly big enough to use and store.

Give the ground a top dressing of something like growmore or fish blood and bone first and do not use ground that you have previously grown onions/leeks/garlic on this year or last if possible.
