;D I have been given some dill by a plotty friend and not sure what to do with it, she said it is delish with boiled potatoes and said throw a bunch in with the spuds stalks and all.
Anyone used it like this? I thought maybe the stalks should be cut off ???
Depends on the size of the stalks for they can be very tough and chewy. I guess your friend meant simply use them as a flavouring for the potatoes rather than eat them.
Iain
;) Thanks Iain, for the quick reply, yes I meant as flavouring only and have since consumed the potatoes with a meal and didn't notice much difference in the flavour. :-\
I am blaming myself for this as I have just found out I should have stored the dill in a glass of water and kept refrigerated for up to two days if not using immediately ::)
Hope she offers me some more, I might just get it right next time ::) :P
Dill's good for your digestion. It's what's in gripe water :) Dill pickles too :)
dill loves pickles. hmmm yum!
also, use the dill for a dill sauce (as opposed to a parsley sauce) to go with potatoes and fish. for this, only use the soft 'leaves' not the hard stalks. my favourite ever!!! :)
I don't have any dill on my plot yet but am working on it. Sowed some sage a few weeks ago and it's made some good strong plants which I wanted to plant on plot today but ran out of time. I spent all morning ironing and getting more fed up as I wanted to be on my plot. Got to plot and after doing all the watering ran out of time to plant my sages :( There's always tomorrow :)
Dill is deelish with cucumber as a sauce
( see cuc & dill sauce in recipe section)
& goes fantastically with Salmon.
I like dill chopped finely with mint and stirred into plain yoghourt, served to use as a dip with hot pitta bread.
Just pop a little spray inside a trout with a bit of lemon peel and some black pepper, before you put it on the Bar-b. Very delicate - totally scrumptious
I must've spilt a pack of dill seeds last year - though I have no memory of it - but the stuff is coming up everywhere. Luckily I love it, and since I'm growing Venlo pickling cues it'll come in really handy.
I'll let you know when I harvest the seeds and if anyone wants some, give us a shout.
Righto :)
Thanks for help and ideas ;) it sounds like a very handy herb, I have transplanted dill and all other herbs I had in pots up to the lottie as they appear to need a lot of attention with watering and didn't look too healthy in small pots, hope they grow well and fill out in the open. ;D
I used lashings of the delicate leaves in my dill pickled gherkins. I also love the young frilly leaves in my salads and sangers. The stems are great when making stock - waste not want no! Also, if cooking a whole oily fish, stuff some stems in the cavity before cooking. Yum!
