Title: The pumpkin patch
Post by: Mrs Ava on July 18, 2005, 23:15:10
A couple of pics of my pumpkin patch.  Not really much to look at as you can't see the fruits.  The poor plants are suffering in the heat at the moment and some are wilting, but we did have 5 minutes of rain tonight, so hopefully they will be a little perkier tomorrow.

The structure is my 'patented anti blight house and sqasharama'.  Under there and along one side are tomatos, covered by a corregated plassy roof, and along the otherside are upwardly mobile squash plants.

EJ  Ta for that!  Is it ok to let squashes romp over weedy ground do you think?  I thought
they might help to supress weeds or am I barking up the wrong doodah?

The cloche is actually a roof from an old greenhouse that was being dismantled and dumped.  Under there I have 4 cucumber plants and 2 melon plants.  Bit of a trial really, only down side is I really have to remember to water them - not easy on my site as you know!  So far had lots of cuces and more are coming so it seems to be working.  Now if only the melons would grow!

I have let some of the more sprawling pumpkins wander over weedy ground.  I am sure it is a good way of smothering the weeds as some of the leaves are huge!  To be honest, mine seem to have a mind of their own and are going over weeds, over the paths, up beanpoles, around the tomatos!  I think it is a good year for all that is squash like!

I must say - your scarecrow is very lifelike. I was just thinking 'who is this person in all the shots and why haven't they moved at all'.  :)

Errr - it *is* a scarecrow, isn't it. No offence if it's actually your OH!

hehehe, it is a scarecrow, I am the proud owner of 2 that my better half and the kids made one balmy Sunday.  I do find myself chatting to them, and you know the bonus, they don't answer me back!  ;D

Right I'll let them romp away then.  Well they're not all romping far at the mo but I hope for
great things.  I didn't think the person on your plot was a scarecrow - but I didn't think it
was you  ;D

Thanks for letting me see your plot EJ. ;D It's really helpful to what peeps do on their lotties, how they set them out and the like.  I'm hoping to get lots of time at mine now the school holidays are upon us and I don't have to walk to school mid afternoon. I've told my son he'll be helping and I got a mixed reception.  I'm going to set him away on his own patch with his sister.  Getting him to make a scarecrow should keep him amused too. I only regret that we haven't got any pumpkins growing this year. Grew them ( well 1 haha!) at home last year but wasn't organised enough this year  :( .   Haven't got anything except weeds yet but bit by bit I'll get there.
