Title: Any fast Growers.....
Post by: Lazybones on July 18, 2005, 12:09:43
We are trying to get a group of staff and students more interested in fruit and veg and I have been asked to bring veg in and give it away/sell it which I am more than happy to do.  The only thing is that obviously I have loads of stuff down the lottie but most of which I eat.  What can I still plant now that be be a fast growth time so we can get started asap.  I was thinking radishes/mixed salad leaves and hopefully I will soon have a glut of courgettes.  I suppose they could have some of my early potatoes and shallots but I have not planted enough beans/carrots etc.  Any advice gratefully received on anything else to put in  ;D

Wish they had told me when I was planting up but you know how it is.

Rocket is about as fast as it gets and quite a trendy salad crop.

Cress in egg shells  ;D

Sprout some mung beans very quick only requires a twice daily rinse

Wheat grass grown in seed trays for juice is very quick but requires a auger type juicer.

I would agree with radish and any salad greens.  I sowed some romano lettuce last week and it is up and on first true leaves already!  Beetroot seem to be quite fast if you don't mind them small and you can water them lots!  Everyone seems to have a glut of courgettes and runner beans!  ;D

Mixed stiry fry leaves.  I grew some pak choi in a growbag (three rows) and it romped away. Must put some more in   :)

What about some of the herbs - basil and chives both grow very quickly or like the others say salad leaves that can be eaten as baby leaves - rocket, chards, pak choi, lollo rosso, lollo bionda, romaine (cos), red mustard to name a few!
