Title: shallots
Post by: Dominique on July 15, 2005, 12:06:52
Hello everyone!  Just pulled out my first crop of shallots.  Should I keep some of the small ones to plant again or do I need to order some new sets in the autumn? ???

I always buy new as my shallots suffer from white rot.  gggrrr.

I always keep some back for next year - the ones i'm using now have been handed down from my grandfather, probably been going at least 25 years. I reckon the flavour improves over time, they make pickled onoins that'll blow your head off!  :o  I get the odd problem with white rot - but only if on certain patches of my allotment. This year they've been fine.

Yes - the reason I say eat them is that some folk don't have the facilities to store till planting time.

If you've got more than you need - we never have - then store them, if clean, & risk it.
