My latest sowing of coriander is going to seed at 4" high. A new low!

Lettuces springing away, coriander, chard, wonder why I ever bother trying to grow coriander.
Calabrese is doing the same, heads have only just appeared!
The thistles are going to seed on my plot. I chop them down, up they come with more flower heads. Do wish I had time to get round to digging the rest of the plot.
Holidays start next week ;D

??? I thought parsley was biennial and only went to seed in the second year? Or are some varieties annual?
Oddly enough Chard is the one thing growing well-the rest is the pits,I have become a stranger here-if you saw what I have let my garden turn into you would understand.

Some of my chard is bolting too. Also put in some cabbages about 3 weeks ago - gone straight to seed! Doesdn't seem any time at all since it was too cold to get things going - now it's too hot and they've all gone!

I have discovered that some coriander is grown because it makes a lot of seed and goes to seed quickly (which is what I had always grown) but now I have some called Cilantro which is grown more for the leaves. hopefully its not too late to try it.
My lovingly cared for calabrese, netted, weeded ....... straight to seed!! :'(
Is it worth resowing if any of these go straight to seed?
well, though it's still hot for the forseeable future - the days are getting shorter. that should tell the plants something! or nothing, who knows.

I have been growing broccoli, Autumn Calabrese, and it is coming along nicely. The trouble is although they have got florets on now, I am not sure how big to let them grow. Last year my broccoli went straight to seed and I don't want it to happen again this year. How big do you think I should safely let them grow before picking them? :) busy_lizzie
What variety? Headed or sprouting type?
Main thing is not to let the buds start to open.
And Cilantro - aka Coriander - that's what they've been telling us for years!!

Coriander starting to seed (but I am still eating it), as well as thyme, mint and other herbs. Hope it is OK to ingest the seeds.. ???

Hee hee, I'm only 32, and after my spinach (predictably) bolted, I just couldn't be bothered to sow any more. Chard it is, then, and some salad leaves. ;D
I'm quite interested in this Cilantro variety of coriander. It is annoying the way it runs to seed so quickly, but then the seeds are what is used to make coriander powder (I think) so that would be desirable in some situations I guess. not for those of us who want the leaves though!
Two attempts at florence fennel, all to seed, have another batch just coming through now....third time lucky maybe?
Dill, all to seed, but the leaves it has on the stem I can use with my pickles.
Old Jack grows boltardy beetroot due to our lack of water, and guess what, the lot has bolted!
On the subject of Florence Fennel - mine are just starting to form bulbs and I'm holding my breath to see if they'll bolt. It' s the first time growing them (as with everything else) so I'm not entirely sure how they're supposed to develop. Any hints on how to stop bolting, and if it does happen, can I still use the bulbs if they've got to a reasonable size first? Oh, and should I be fencing them off/ netting them etc?

Glad I'm not the only one with nice white flowers on my coriander instead of lots of lushous leaves - thought it was beginners bad luck! Will try again and see what happens.
My coriander (which is the first time I've grown it) has bolted too.....went away for 10 days and when I returned - it was 2ft high with all these flowers on/in it....at first I thought it was weed growing thru but soon realised what had happened....

It should be a nicely sized conical heart. This is another gone-to-seed thing.
ok, have a question for you guys.
i still have that flowering coriander and a lot of it has now got green seeds on it. how do you harvest coriander seeds? do you have to wait until they turn brown on the plant, or could i pull up the plants now and hang them somewhere to dry and will that give me good edible coriander seeds? :)

My father in law (whi is fromSri Lanka) ate most of my seeds when they went brown. straight from the plant. You kind of crumble them from the top and they are ready to use.
Svea, I am not sure but I believe you wait for the seeds to darken a little then harvest them. Keep them in a little paper bag and plant out in spring - Hope this is the right thing to say ??? ::)
