What exactly is a computer warrenty worth these days ?? :'( :'( :'( :'( I had my
latest 1 since september and only now was I gonna burn some music to cd's
or so I thought turns out my stupid cd writer will not do it for some reason
bear in mind its under warrenty......... I contacted where I bought it to be
given an 09 number to phone from where I think I must have been passed to
each and every dept in the place.........finally got the techie that I needed after
56 minutes by the time we had went through the procedure he wanted me to
go through we were up to 90 mins and no closer to getting it working.....also
bear in mind I am a computer novice.......techie says my calls are stacking up
sir..........gave me another procedure to do and says he will call back in an hour
needless to say that never worked either and niether did the techie phone back
either........... pullin my hair out and steam coming from ears by this time
so after a 40 min search managed to get through with an e-mail helpline got
a 4 page document... that included to uninstall and install the bios among other
things which for those not in the know if your bios is buggred ya software dont run......... but even though I was crappin myself in doing it I bit the bullet n did
And hell would you believe it....................................................... yeah your right
it didn't work :'( so another long phone call ensued bottom line 1 more thing
was to be done before they would take it in for repair a system restore which has
been done I lost 8 months of different files and over a 1000 music files......
whats really sickened me is this it never worked so am now awaiting further instructions as to when its goin and heaven knows when the hell it will come back
what happened to the old days when they sent a repairman out because what I feel is am or have been repairing it under thier instructions.......should I be paid a
consultancy fee...? ok thats me done am gonna go back n kick the s hit outta my
punch bag now........ :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
tAKE YOUR PUTER BACK TO THE SHOP YOU BOUGHT IT FROM oppppppps wrong case ;D ;D ;D.
the shop is responsable for faulty goods, deal with them, go to the CAB they are very helpful. I do hope you get something done soon.
In the meantime keep kicking the punchbag not the cat. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Hi Jaggy
if you have flashed the BIOS and it was done incorrectly you may have damaged the main board beyond repair. What state is your machine in now? does it boot ?
You have my sympathies, :( I’ll be glad when my 5 year warranty runs out, I think this is one of the biggest rip offs in insurance deals that targets novices. >:(
Having had several problems with my PC over the years I found myself phoning 09 numbers regularly and each call was lengthy and I am convinced that the techy staff at the call centre were paid extra for prolonging the call, I could never get a call to run under 30 minutes even when urging the techy to pull his finger out. ::)
On one incident alone I had a monthly bill from this PC centre with calls running up to £16.00. I wrote to PC demanding recompense, they sent me a cheque in due cause and included a £40 voucher as hush money, only it didn’t work. >:(
So beware PC buyers when you next take out insurance ask the salesman how much the helpline calls will cost, then keep it in mind that they will be lengthy calls>:(
My sympathies too >:(
mine konked out 11 months and 25 days after purchase - twice - so I brought an extended warranty, as you've guessed it, the manufacturers warranty only lasted 12 months.
when I called the helpline, the young man who 'helped' me more or less suggested it was my fault and I had imported a virus, turned out the hard drive was faulty.
Anyway, when I replace it in a year or two, I will get a cheap and cheerful as it will be cheaper than the warranty. ;)

When ours went (out of guarantee and never ever get extended) we found it was cheaper to take the machine to our local Computer shop and get them to fit a new hard drive, than the cost of phone calls to the original sellers.
Eric you are so right, but we learn the hard way, this of course applies to so many electrical products. ::)Â I need to hire a teenager while they still know everything. ;D
A little off topic but good advice- something known as planned obscolence- doesnt really apply to computers as incompatibility of old hardware and software will force you to upgrade. But if youre buying say a washing machine or dryer- get the 5 year garauntee. These machines in particular are designed to break after 3-5 years, so that you have to buy new ones often and therefore the industry is kept afloat. So get the 5 year and the only folks losing out are the insurance company.
John
Why aren't you all "naming and shaming"?
My business uses Dell PCs. We did have all Evesham ones but there were repeated hard disk problems, so we went to Dell.
The "trick" is not to buy an all bells and whistles state of the art games machine, with the latest(= untested)sound and video cards, but to start with a basic machine and add exactly what you want.
The warranties sold with PCs are U/S unless they specify that the repais are on-site. Return to base warranties can leave you waiting for weeks. And you have to make very sure that you spell it out loud and clear that on-site means just that, and that you don't have to call an expensive helpline.
Interestingly enough, my staff's laptops have all been bought from (different) branches of PC World, and each one was personally specified, and this didn't cause a problem. When things go wrong you can take the machine back to any PC World branch and the tekkies there will usually sort out the glitch there and then.
In my experience the people I will keep clear of include Tiny, and any of the Dixons/Comet type of store. There you get muppets and not geeky tekkies.
And, please, don't mess with BIOS unless you want to buy a new machine. The minute you lose track of what a helpline is asking you to do, you really need to go to the system restore section of the handbook or HELP buttons...
Our machine was bought from PC World and since the nearest is a 60 mile round trip taking it back for repairs becomes a bit expensive. (120 miles, if you think of delivering and collecting it). THough I have to say the sales person was very helpful and even pointed out that the system we were putting together was more than the budget we had specified.
As for Extended warrantees, well our fridge, vacuum cleaner , freezer and washing machine have now all lasted longer than the period of the Extended Warrantee and have needed no (hubris again) major repairs or expenditure on them. All the reports we read before purchasing seemed to say that E.W's were not worth the paper they were wriiten on!
Would never buy insurance for any electrical goods. Complete waste of money in my view. If you look at how much they cost per year over the 3/4/5 years, you may as well save it towards a new one or repairs - repairs most often cheaper than the warranty. Been shown by Which magazine several times to be a complete rip-off - they advise against them if asked. Put the money to one side for new goods when you ned/want them. Last thing I bought a £25 kettle and was asked if i wanted an extended warranty for £15 (!). I think not.
I too learnt the very hard way last year when I lost the entire content of my hard drive.
The good news is the computer is in my office at work and, as the IT department were so helpful ! ::) ??? :P, I took it myself down to a little local PC mending shop who kindly copied all 0f the files I wanted onto a disc. I of course needed a new PC but at least, all my files had been saved. :D
But if I were you, as others have said, I would take it back to the shop and make a lot of noise !
>:( Good luck ! ;D

Trenchboy what do you mean when you say that the latest hardware = untested ?
