Title: garlic - bolting
Post by: Gail-M on July 08, 2005, 10:09:33
Hi ,

all my garlic has bolted - does anyone know if this means it will not keep and store through the winter ?

any ideas how to prevent this happening again ? I grow garlic every year and its not happened before - don't think I've done anything different.

thanks, Gail.

Some varieties are called hardneck garlic and naturally produce a flower spike. If you cut this off the energy will go back into the bulb which will be a bit bigger.  The flower buds (scapes) make THE most fantastic scape pesto

The belief is that the presence of scapes (the flower head things) reduces the storage life somewaht, but removal as soon as they are seen will restore the situation
