Title: First Spuds - help!
Post by: Justy on July 06, 2005, 12:28:51
Just dug up first spuds  ;D some from the ground and some from my experiment with compost bags.

The ones from the bags are perfect new potatoes but the ones from the ground have tiny little white specks on them and some black areas.  They are also a bit scabby but I know that is ok.  Are they ok to eat with these little white dots?

They'll be fine to eat, sounds like common scap or ants. You might want to peel then rather than scrub the skin off like normal new spuds.

Thanks Keef - you were right once scrubbed up they were fine.  And when cooked......  YUM!  Absolutely perfect.  They were very nobbly and misshapen but could have been the variety (if only I knew what it was.... :-[)

I just dug the first of my Duke of Yorks after work today. They look good, I'll be cooking them when I have the energy!

Provided you haven't used any nasty chemicals, don't peel spuds - lots of the goodness is just under the skin

My wretched family all turn their noses up at the skins, even though they're the best bit.

to robert brenchley: not quite sure what energy is required to cook your beautiful potatoes ...  just some gas or electricity ...

School is so exhausting I get home and I can't cope if I've had a rough day. Anyway, I made a curry last night, and my daughter cooked a pot of food as well, so that's us set up for a few days.
