Title: kohl rabi - split at top - what's going on?
Post by: Mike J on July 03, 2005, 23:07:50
Was checking again today the excellent (I thought) progress my kohl rabi were making, when I noticed that the top of several had a vee-shaped split. Anyone got any idea what this is about - lack of water maybe? is this a disaster?

I think it is due to watering.  But not a disaster as I recall mine did much the same last year and they almost heal as they split.  Still perfectly edible!  (Mine are still only babies!)

Thanks, Emma, you're right, they have healed as they split, I'm glad they will still be edible as it's one of the crops I grew without ever having eaten them before. In the same patch, also previously 'untasted' are pak choi (delicious I now discover, when used like celery and dipped), salsify and fennel. The pak choi has retarded the growth of a small row of kohl rabi so I have fortuitously got the effect of successional sowing.....
