Title: Veggie patch this time.
Post by: ina on July 02, 2005, 20:05:36
From front to back: purslain, lettuce bed (what's left of it), beetroot, swiss chard, courgette, climbing french beans and runner beans.

Under the invironmesh is broccoli and parsnips, to the left strawberries, the tall thing is kapucijners (a kind of pea in a purple pod). No, that's not a mailbox on the right but an electrical outlet.

Today's harvest, the first broccoli ever but not the last.

Ina the broccoli looks lovely.  :D And your plot looks so neat, not a weed in sight.

Ah Ruud, you are overestimating me hahaha.

Thanks Jesse, I am so pleased with the broccoli. Not being sure when to harvest, I worried it might burst into blooms but I wanted the heads as big as possible. The smaller of the two could have stayed on a bit longer I think. Does anyone know if broccoli shoots suddenly or if you have a few days to harvest when it threatens to start blooming?

Lokking very good indeed.

I have just started to pick Calabrese too, they will stand on the plant for a few days but if hot will go to flower very quickly.

(Wish we had electric on the plots here!)

Thanks Sanders, I was afraid of that. It's the only draw-back of not being able to check on your plants daily.

(I have never used the electric. When they were going to install it last year, I was informed that I had to clear a strip along the main path of plants so they could dig in the cable. I told them I didn't want electric and was told that it was for the allotmenteers on the other side of the path to cut their hedges and that they couldn't get into the ground there because of the hedges. I lost a lot of good plants and even got the outlet on my allotment. Talk about too much of a good thing hehehe)

Balls! We have a site that's listed due largely to its hedges. There's no electric and they get cut.
