Title: Bolting Onions
Post by: Learner Gardener on July 01, 2005, 10:40:50
Some of my onions have begun to form flower spikes. What do I need to do ?

Do I leave them and ignore it ?

Do I cut the flower spikes off and leave the rest in the ground ? What will happen if I do this ?

Do I dig that particular onion out and use it as soon as possible ?

Any guidance what be appreciated ....

There has been some discussion on here before concerning this problem. I believe pinching off the flower spikes is the best thing to do.

Try a search  :)

As said - cut them off - and use flowered ones first.

I always get this, from both 'normal' sets and the overwintering ones. As said, pinch the flower shoots off as low as possible and use them ASAP. Are seedgrown onions as bad in this respect? The large number I always get bolting is a bit discouraging!
