Title: Poppies
Post by: janebb on June 22, 2005, 17:13:51
My perennial poppies have taken a bit of a battering from my sons' football.  Is there any way of resurrecting them or do I have to rip them out?  They look a bit of a mess at the moment with broken bits here, there and everywhere. Can I cut them back hard and if so when do I do it?

Help somebody!

Big argument somewhere, here or Beeb, cannot remember. However, we cut ours back after flowering, like with geraniums, and they come back strongly each year and flower occasionally in Autumn.

According to Gardening Which trials if you cut them right back now they will produce lots of nice new leaves & flower again later. (They will probably flower again if you don't but will look alot tattier). I usually give a good feed & water when I cut right back to encourage the new growth.

Thank you everyone.

This is good news.  I will be out in the garden with my secateurs as soon as I have posted this.
