WOW!  Was he on your plot??  I came across an adder in our garden when we lived in sunny Kent.  It was lurking in the childrens plastic playhouse!  Absolutely beautiful!  I adore snakes and although allotment legend says there are plenty on our plot, I am yet to come across one!

EJ,
I'm afraid it wasn't from my plot.  This was one of a few I came across today down in sunny Dorset at a place I've seen them before- last time I didnt have a camera with me!!.    Took this piccy(along with 50 or so others) whilst taking a break from work.  I was no more than 4 foot from this beauty.

I have found that to get this close or closer, you have to be very quiet and take slow steps.  If the adders dart in to cover stand where you are and stay very quiet and it may reappear- I learnt this from experience.
