Couldn't work out where to post this!
How do you boil wash cotton dish cloths?
I have a 95C cycle on my washing machine, but it seems a bit of a waste to put a few dish cloths in it each week. I could bulk it up with tea towels, but even so - not enough.
Can I wash them on the stove? Should I use detergent? How long to boil them for? Will it be ok to use a cooking pan (I haven't got any spares)?
What are you going to have 'em with, chips? ;D
Certainly would not boil them in a pan with detergent as the taste of the detergent would stay in the pan forever. Why not try dropping them into boiling water with a little bleach added( in a bucket) and leave to steep over night. That should make them sterile.
I do the same as Eric, and use an old ice cream tub with cold water and bleach overnight. Stick my scrubby brush thingy in with it too! DP
Well I keep my dish sponge clean but every day I stick it into the microwave for 2 minutes.  I have read about this tip in a magazine. We are still here.  ;D ;D ;D ;D. I also do the soaking in bleach as well.Â
miltons sterilising fluid in cold water for 30 mins.
apparently if you iron them it kills the germs too - but i have never tried.......
My brushes often go int eh dishwasher to sterilise............iron my cotton dish cloths, blimey then I would have to start on the underwear! :o
Hell fire, I must be germ infested then. Tea towels go in the washing machine daily, scrubby thingy goes in the dishwasher whenever it goes on, and a new washing up spongey thingy a couple of times a week!
And DP, you made me chuckle as my darling Ava ironed a few work shirts for himself, and picked up and ironed a tea towel! I told him I shall save it for a special occassion as it is the only tea towel I have ever owned to see the under side of an iron! ;D
I must be a big Nancy then. When I help out with ironing I iron everything in the basket.....everything, even under-keks.
Ken, would you like to move into my house?? ;D ;D
Aqui - try your local car boot sales. There are usually odd saucepans for sale cheap. Get one and keep it just for boiling the dishcloths and tea towels.
This can work quite well:
Milton to knock the bugs on the head, then a normal wash to clean the dish cloths.
or, like Granny says... an old pan purely for the dish clouts.
When I remember I pop mine in the dishwasher.
Treat them the same as for terry nappies...er...not that I remember them of course (ahem!)
;)
BEWARE..Household bleach will rot cotton cloths in no time.
Dissolves wool too so don't use it on a wool carpet to remove stains either!

:) I can't understand all the fuss!!
All of us are out there hands in mud, compost and worse you can't boil yer hands.................................

I don't do ironing. It has a plug on the end, therefore it's a power tool, therefore it's a boy's toy. ;D
oooooooooooo, like your logic there Baggy. ;D

As long as you remember that rule when it comes to the TV, that's fine....
right so ice cream tub and solution of miltons it is then.
The only thing I remember doing with Terry nappies is p**ing in them! My own kids are (fortunately) still only figments of my imagination.
irons? Oh they are those things you are supposed to use on plant shelves. No - plant shelves have another name, ironing board (or is it bored?!!)
