Title: Blueberries/ soft fruit suppliers
Post by: sarahr on June 17, 2005, 16:02:48
Can anyone recommend a good supplier for blueberries or soft fruits? I was hoping to grow some in pots. I've seen some at ken muir but I didn't want to spend that much. Victoriana has some but they are only for putting in the ground. Any help would be appreciated.

I went with a friend once to James Trehane at Wimborne to buy blueberry plants, they were very impressive and helpful and they did PYO too so I came back with a load to freeze.  I don't know what their prices are like though.

The Telegraph last Saturday had a whole really interesting article on blueberries, I have kept it somewhere, will dig it out for you and see who they suggest for suppliers, if you want I can get the article photocopied and sent to you.  (It was quite lengthy!)  DP

Try this link to the Telegraph article:

assuming it is the same one Doris?

General list of suppliers can be found over here:

I know someone who has bought from James McIntyre & is very happy with the quality:

http://www.james-mcintyre.co.uk/soft%20fruit.htm, but unfortunately their new catalogue for the coming autumn is not yet online... but you could bookmark and keep checking.

Is it me or does Ken Muir seem a little overpriced? I'm sure he sells good quality plants but even so

I got my last one from the local nursery.  About this time of year too.  And my first pair (still going) were from a garden centre in Staffordshire somewhere whose name escapes me... I'll go and see if there's still a tag tomorrow (though I don't think so - the variety names also have passed into the mists...

ps thanks for reminding me - need to find the nets... or the blackbirds will help me pick 'em!

I got my b berries from the dorset blueberry company.  they were fantastic.  you have far more choice of cultivars and they're cheaper and friendlier than ken muir.  they also supply cranberries which are a trailing/sprawling plant you can grow around your blueberries whether in pots or in the ground.  if you have any questions at all, you can e-mail them and they get back to you staight away.  i couldn't recommend them enuf!

What a price the mag/Telegraph/Kitchen Garden "stuff" seems     to be way over price and by the time they have come in t'post they will be nearly wrecked. We must be able to find a better deal than that.
I would like to grow two though.

I bought my apples, raspberries, rhubarb and blackcuttant through them this year -they all seem to be thriving. The apples at least were very reasonable.
