Title: Is it white rot?
Post by: BAGGY on June 15, 2005, 22:41:36
Looked at the onions tonight.  Some are squishy with white mold at the base.  Others in the same row etc are fab.  Some did not grow any larger than the size when they were put in.  Is it white rot or would they all have it ?  The sets were reduced so could it be that they were past their best ?  Quite a few of them had their flower head pinched out but I don't necessarily think it follwed that these ones went squishy.  Help please.  The other plot had no onion probs last year.  ???

Doesn't necessarily affect all the plants. But sounds like the 'killer'!

Check on Emma's photo of it - or look at HDRA's fact sheet.

Some of my Winter Onions have white rot and some haven't, so I am going to pick those that are ok, and get rid of the the rest, but not in the compost bin.  You win some you loose some.  I hope you have better luck next time.

You don't have to bin the affected onions, just chop out the iffy chunk and use them as normal, just a bit quicker than you would normally!
