I am keen to try the benefits of companion planting and have already put marigolds about the place and have some poached egg plant to sow.
When I have been looking into this it says not to plant beans and onions together. How close would together be counted as?! I have a bean and pea bed next to a bed with onions in (probably about 3 ft away from each other). Is this too close? Can't do anything about it now but could sort for next year.
Incidently why can't they go together?!
probably because they have different needs. The beans love water and onions don't need to be over watered. I tried putting in beans with sweetcorn last year (they both need watering well) and yes it worked but my friend thought I was mad cos I have plenty of room anyway which is true but it was just for something different to do.
:) Do a search Justy theres several topics on this subject.
Last weekend I went to a marvelous flower show and gained the enclosed information about herbs. You can guess what MY lottie is goinfg to look like! :D
Chives next to roses prevent blackspot
Chives next to apple trees prevent scab
Borage attracts blackfly, leaving other plants alone!
Near tomatoes it can control tomato worm
And it attracts bees â€" helping to pollinate runner beans and strawberries!
Chamomile next to onions repels flying insects,
Improves crop yield
Fennel attracts hoverflies and keeps whitefly at bay
Hyssop grown near cabbages lures whiteflies away
Spearmint or Peppermint grown hear roses will deter aphids
Catmint near vegetables deters flea beetle
Rosemary near carrots will repel carrot fly
And is generally beneficial to Sage
Sage near cabbages will repel cabbage white butterflies
Nasturtium attracts blackfly away from vegetables
Attracts hoverflies which attack aphids
And repels whitefly, wholly aphids and ants!
Valerian near vegetables boosts their growth
Stimulates phosphorous and earthworm activity.
Thanks for that, I'm going to print it, cos I'll never remember it all :)

I can guarantee that sage next to cabbages doesn't work, cabbage whites can't get to my cabbages because they're netted so they've laid their eggs on the sage which is 2 feet away.
What on earth is a tomato worm?
Dunno about borage and blackfly; I have it all over my plot, and I've never noticed aphids on it. I'll have to check tomorrow. Meanwhile they're all over my broad beans where the tits haven't had them.
