Title: Pests in general what we do.
Post by: portway farm on June 14, 2005, 16:53:19
Ants - lavender, Tansy and curry plant. Salt, cayenne pepper and curry powder sprinkled around plants. Boiling water down nest. Half squeexed orange on ground let ants rush it then pick it up and place on bird table for birds to eat ants. Finally semolina and polenta the ants take it to the queen who eats but cannot digest it and explodes - no queen no eggs no nest. Workers move on or die.

Slugs - make slug traps, place pieces of wood on ground and then each night collect and give to chickens. Make a pond out of flatish bucket not a deep bucket place loads of stones in it and watch the frogs etc come. Comfrey, the slugs fav food will eat there first and then you can catch them. Egg shells on ground slugs cannot cross them. Seaweed slugs hate it and it acts as a fertilizer at same time.

Wasps - attract them and they will work for you. Plant ainse, dandelion, camomille etc

I have used hair clippings around our pumpkins and squashes and I haven't seen a slug since.

I read in your other post about mixing up your own sprays to combat pests.
What do you use and on what.I am currently testing out home made copper rings to control slugs.

Thanks portway farm - there are some new ones there (and in your companion post) that I have never heard of.

Cayenne pepper and curry powder seem to have no effect on ants for me  :(  The semolina/polenta tip sounds interesting - if rather gruesome!  Will try that.  Thanks Portway Farm.

Westsussexlottie - why do you suppose the hair clippings work? Texture? Hairs get stuck to slime?  We keep my son's head skinned so I've regularly got clippings.  I might give this a go.  Is it still working for you?

Talking of hot stuff that does not work our newfie when a puppy tried to eat through our walls - loved the taste of plaster - thank god no vet bills!! Well it was suggested to us by the breeder to spread smelling salts and chilli on the wall she was munching - well we must have the only dog that adores smelling salts and would beat a mexican at a chilli cook off!!!!! Your ants obviously are into vindaloos!!!!

I dont actually do much in the way of pest control.    One of Broad bean stems was covered with aphids- got a spray gun out, just filled with water and knocked em all of the stem.   I checked the following day and still no aphids.   i wonder if they'll still be aphid free when I go down there tonight?
