Hi all - dad has just informed me that he has bought a terrex spade at a car boot for £2 and did I want it. He seemed to think that a) this was really good buy and b) it would be the best spade I ever used because it had a special lever to make digging easier.
Has anyone ever heared of or used one? Is it worth me getting from dad? ???
Never heard of one but it's got to be worth a try.

Regarding the Terrex spade, that was £2 well spent as one just sold on Ebay for over £50. you will find that there is a knack to using a spring spade which is easily mastered and when you get used to it, it's  as easy as riding a bike, 5 times faster than a conventional spade and no backache.
I found the best method is to flick the spit well forward, about a yard or so and get a good trench underway, that way you bury the weeds well as you go with a good tythe.
Some people find them very useful, especially if you have a bad back.
They are however very difficult to get hold of and I have heard that they go for a lot more than £2 on ebay. Therefore, if the one your father has is in good condition, I would keep it.

Another tip, try to use the Terrex when the soil is moist and take a small spit to start, I now take a 3 spit back per row which speeds thing's up.
hmmm not sure about this spade. Very weird looking and the handle is so long that I can't get my foot on it to push into the ground. Then all it seems to do is flick the earth up in the air and away from me!! Think this was designed before many women did digging!
