Title: How do you get an allotment?
Post by: shaolin101 on June 10, 2005, 11:17:17
I only use my back garden which unfortuantley doesn't get much sun due to biuldings.

I am in south east London so there are not many areas to grow. (Bermondsey/Rotherhithe)

Just wondered waht the process is to get an allotment eg

Do you get them when you buy a home
Are they rented from a council
Are most on waiting lists

Thanks
Liam

hey liam,

normally you ring up the council for information on where the the nearest sites are, and how to contact the allotment secretary. (or check on their website)

there are also private allotments - for instance, our allotment site is a private one owned by the church commissioners. we only knew about it because our flat happens to overlook the site, and we were told by the neighbours who the secretary was.
it may be worth checking in your local area (go for walks etc) to see if there appear to be any privately owned sites.

we were lucky with no waiting lists on oursite, but it depends from site to site.
i know that when we still lived in wandsworth, the waiting list for the nearest council owned site was three years plus!!!
we now live in southwark, btw :)

Thanks,

I will go for a wonder around!

Are tehy generally expensive to rent, or would it depend on size and location?

Considering a garage was sold for about £55,000 down the road form me the other day I wouldn't be surprised if it was excessive!

i pay £10 a year for my 6x11m plot
like i said, this is with the church commisioners.

i dont know what the level of rent is for the council ones - best ring the council to find out.

i know wandsworth would have been very expensive, with a plot costing in excess of £200 a year to rent.

you don't buy allotments, btw - you always lease/rent them. unless you are very lucky ;)

btw, i know there is a site somewhere in peckham where carrie potters (she is a member at A4A). best to try and get a site as close to home as possible though - i think it is important because it gives you less excuse to not go up to the plot on the weekend/evening ;)

Ours is rented from the Parish Council for £24 a year. It is about 8m x 25m big enough for us. There is a water supply there (free).

Ours are all council owned so I just rang up the council parks and gardens dept and asked about them.  Luckily, there wasn't a waiting list so I was sent a plan of the lottie, went down and had a look (asked a few questions of other lottie holders), and then went into the council offices and got my agreement, key etc.  My lottie is 250m2 and costs £24.50 per year (but I'm up in Yorkshire where prices are cheaper than the south).  Free water, free leaves in the autumn for leaf mould, lots of weeds - also free.  But its great!

I guess that you're in the London Borough of Southwark?  If so go to www.southwark.gov.uk and on the A-Z index, go to Allotments.  They have all the contact details.

Mine's £32 a year for 600 square yards and a hedge. The site is listed because of the hedges (allegedly it was considered so important that they changed the rules in order to allow it to be listed without buildings; I don't know whether this is true) so hedge care is vital.

Don't worry Tamsin.  It probably costs me more in fleece etc to protect everything from the cold weather up here in the North.  Swings and roundabouts, ho-hum!  :)

I rent my half plot from our Parish council and I found their details through the regular council. It's in a small village just outside of Bath, UK. I pay £7.50 a year for my plot (the fifty pence being the water charge). I couldn't believe it when they told me how much it was - daylight robbery   ;D

The letters have been posted as I couldn't be phoning all day so am just waiting for replies now - wonder how long the waiting lists are!

There is one right near me which always seems to have stuff growing so i dont think any will be available. They are right by a main road as well - joy of city living - the pollutants from the cars are a great bonus.

I have applied to ones slightly out of my area but I am pretty central to most places so may as well ask - nothing to lose!
