Hello people!
I've just acquired an allotment!
Needless to say it's now 3 foot deep in grass. To clear it will take me a couple of weeks, buy yards of black poly ect bla bla, and then I can get started!
BUT - it will then be mid June. So what should I NOT waste my time on to try and get to grow?  Luckily I'm into mini veg!!
I'm a bit rusty on veggie growing, 20 yrs rusty, so all good advice gratefully received. I assume I can still put in a main crop of spud, would Romanos do?
Also what's the favoured salad leaves these days?
Ciao!
Welcome flowerlady. And congrats on getting a lottie! Where abouts in the world are you??
I will be sowing anything and everything up into September! And if your plot will be ready by mid June, then really anything goes. A lot of nurseries and garden centres are selling little plants, so if you haven't already got your plants growing ready to be planted, then you could always pick up a few there.
Favoured salad leaves, well I have lollo rosso, biondi, chicory, rocket, basil, flat leaf parsley, little gems curly parsley and a couple of mixes all growing happily on the plot for the salad bowl. Plus I steal baby leaves from kale, spinach, chard and beetroots! ;D
As for spuds, I will leave that to an expert as I have no idea what is a good late planter.
Take it easy though. You are giving yourself just a couple of weeks to clear the plot....is it in okay nick? I took on a half last autumn that was head high in grass, nettles and thistles and only had it cleared this spring.
Thanks for the pointers on the salad, mouth is watering already!
Still would appreciate some advice on spuds, anyone?
If you can still get hold of first earlies I should give them a go
Well, you could sow in pots, spring cabbage and some quick maturing summer cabbages. Also, salads, carrots, peas, french and runner beans. In autumn, you can sow a number of things for the following year, if they have a bit of protection. Some green manures can be sown as well.
