Title: Is everyone OK?
Post by: Granny_Smith on January 30, 2004, 10:03:55
How have you all survived this awful snowy, cold weather - no serious problems/injuries I hope. Let us know if anything happened to you and if you are OK now.

Cambridge roads became gridlocked on Wednesday pm due to the heavy snowfall - it took me over 2 hours to travel less than 3 miles in the town, and then another hour to travel the remaining 12 miles to the village where I live. Poor hubby was desparately trying to find me in all the traffic (don't tell anyone but was forced to use the mobile phone in the car so that we could speak to each other) Never ever want to drive in weather like that again - but was really caught out on my journey as it happened so quickly. Car was sliding all over the road. Still, we arrived home safely.

Stayed at home yesterday because of the icy roads around the village - impossible to get the car out. Watched the refuse lorry do a delicate sideways slide across the road infront of the house, fortunately it didn't hit anything else.  Am back at work today fit and raring to go - on a Friday, you must be joking !

Well, hate to say it, but I've had to ask a friend to bring us a bottle of Scotch - can't get through the night without it!! And I've seen better folk sliding down our lane. = Tim

Have to admit, here in East Kent have got off very lightly, nothing like 1984  down here.  Sounds like you had what we had then Granny and you Tim.  Empathise with you both, very unpleasant when you really need to get out and about!

Glad you got your scotch Tim, you don't need that sort of penance as well as bad weather!  ;D

Well, the snow and ice is still pretty thick here in our part of Essex.  No serious injuries, altho both kids have been 'a' over 't' more times that I care to remember!  Ava has pinched the car again today rather than go out on the motorbike, the lanes around our way are skid central, and the gritters don't make it right into the sticks!   :-/

Ours has pretty much gone now. The pavement on one side of the road to the station was pretty much clear, which was a relief after yesterday. I walked holding people's fences most of the way (I'm pathetic when it comes to slippery stuff!) Didn't fall, though!

The garden was still covered in snow this morning - looked very pretty. But goes further to remind me how little sun it gets in the winter. I bet it's all gone by this evening, though, before I can get my camera out.

And public transport on my commute has been remarkably good - now major delays (well - no worse than usual!)

Down here it has gone mild very quickly. Only a light frost early on last night then warmer air moved in, melting what was left of the snow.

I do though sympathise with those of you still labouring with the conditions. I have seen plenty of pictures on the news showing what it is like in places. Dont envy anyone that at all.  Certainly wouldnt want to drive in it and end up pranging the car or worse.

Does raise one Q in my mind.  Why couldnt people cancel/ delay journeys until conditions improved, if there was no desperate urgency to their journeys?  It seems that no matter what the weather, life must go on regardless. Got to get into work, got to make such and such journey,, when it is not essential. And then complain that the got stranded/ delayed etc?

In the old days all but essential things stopped and waited for the weather to clear. Not in Todays Britain.

Given the attitude of most employers today, weather is no excuse for not getting to work!  If you falter, there's always someone up your chuff waiting to take your place!

So, not so much a choice, more a fear of losing one's income Richard!

Yes , well i understand that. I was only making an observation.  Many company bosses dont care about things like the weather. Just about geting the work done and making the money.  They are the problem.

do you mind? I'm a 'company boss' - rang round my lot told them to stay indoors and warm - mind you - you couldn't get the scaffolders out in the snow for love nor money!  My accounts officer wasn't due at work on the bad day, but has child at morning nursery and no car - I went and got her and said child in my car as the blizzard hit just at the wrong time.  I assume my sainthood is in the post!!

But yes, years ago I remember struggling to childminder then work in serious snow, walked the last mile with child and got in - 2 hours late.  Next day we all had a letter thanking us for making the effort, but if we were late again our pay would be docked!!

Everyone OK up here in the Scottish Borders, snow almost gone but still behind the 'dykes' which means there is more to come.  According to the forecast for tomorrow we are in for another lot in the morning.  OH NO.  I say, how will I get to Tescos.
Strange really, as I get older I don't like being out on icy snowy road and twenty years ago never thought anything of it at all.  I don't really mind driving on my own on bad road but now scared of the other drivers there are so many fools around and those big 4 x 4's think they own the road at times.  Sorry folks if you have a 4.x4.
